I went through 1 1/2 years of Lupron shots, finally over as of last November. My advice is to keep working out, do cardio, and wait for testosterone levels to rise again. I did whatever my radiologist said to do. Best of luck.

    That's good advice.

I had 18 months of Lupron and recovered OK (age 74 at the time).

my spouse has started the Lupron shot, 6 months, and his emotions are everywhere. I need help to learn how to deal with this new person. He won't talk to anyone and sometimes I find him having a pity party with himself and its hurting our already fragile relationship. He's givin up on living and some days he's good and others he's not. His doctor suggested anti-depressants, but he doesn't feel that will help. Just another pill/bandaide. I need to find someone who can help us both get through this long haul.

    Hi,

Maybe you could go with some new milder less side effect ADT drugs? Talk to your doctor.

Yes, as Clevelandguy wrote, there are alternatives to try. Orgovyx (relugolix) is high on that list but there are other drugs that will kick testosterone way down.

I hate to write this, but starting out with a 6-month shot of Lupron is NOT best practice. One should start with a 1 or 3 month shot to see how the patient reacts. Too late for that, unfortunately.

To combat the Lupron side effects, he should exercise (more) and find other things to do.

I'm sorry I wasn't fully correct when I said his first Lupron was 6 months, this is the 2nd Lupron shot for 6 months. He was on it the first time for 1 month and he was fine. His doctor did not mention that when I told him about the moods.

I will be getting my 3rd six month lupron shot in two weeks

I haven’t had any detrimental effects other than a few self inflicted

I’ve been a weight lifter since in my 20’s. Stopped in my mid 50’s but stayed in good shape working on our farm

Once I started on the lupron, I lost a lot of muscle mass and gained fat. For me that was something I didn’t like but had to get used to. Big ego buster for myself mentally. But, I told myself better to have a jelly belly than only months to live

I hope your husband can get on the meds that don’t affect his mood as much

    best Wishes

The Doc wants me to have the Lupron shot for three months. And already don't like what I read about the side effects. It sounds as if you have to more of the shots it gets worse??

    Thanks

I’m getting my third 6 month shot this month

Side Effects : Hot flashes have been the hardest to get used to. Otherwise it’s been bearable for me

That said, seems like there are some cases of multiple issues. Most of the doctors seem oblivious. Take your cues from this forum. It rocks 🚜🐝🚜

I know doctors can't do much more for my husband other than control the cancer with meds. But his emotions are everywhere and at anytime he changes. I can't help him other than supporting him with positive encouragement.

    Hi,

In March, it will me 30 months since I have re-started the hormonal treatment, in 2023. The period was five eligard-6-month shots that set me into those typical side effects of hypogonadism symptoms. Equally to my initial period of ADT back in 2010/2012, I have experienced mood swings, fatigue, belly fat, arthritis sensations, etc, etc, again but more accommodated in this second time on the drugs.

I thing that, by being aware in advance of what to expect to happen, it has helped me in confronting the situation and become more positive and "relaxed" during those mood swings moments.

My experience is based on ADT administration in an intermittent modality. That allowed me to have a "vacation" period of 10 years without those symptoms from the treatment side effects.

Some guys confront more accentuated symptoms and look for means to also treat those effects. Many used estrogen patches, sort of teas, etc, but one should discuss the matter and follow the advice of their medical team, before engaging on anything.

You can read about my experience in my previous thread in here:

Agonist and Antagonist are classes of drugs that indicate the mechanism of action. There are several drugs within each class.

PS: I just saw that you started a thread on this topic and got one good response so far (from Vasco)

As Old Salt says, the type of testosterone blocker does make a difference in the type of side effects you get. I was on ADT for 3 years with a shot every month (durilyx ?) and now I am on Lupron (3 month dose). The side effects are similar but the intensity can be different. For example, I have lots more Hot flashes but a lot less night sweats. I lost all my pubic hair with the Lupron and didnt with the monthly shot. The monthly shot made my emotions more prominent, not so much with the Lupron. I didnt really have much fatigue with the monthly shot. I am not really sure on Lupron because I am still recovering from Chemo. Get out and start walking and also start some light weight training, that might get you losing some body fat. I ended up losing like 50 lbs and getting in pretty good shape the 1st time around. I am working myself back from the Chemo while I am doing ADT. Its been a challenge. Good luck with your journey !
