Raising awarenessabout the long-term physical and psychological effects (late effects) of cancer treatments, especially for adult survivors of childhood cancer [1].Archiving survivor experiencesto document the systemic issues within the medical community, such as a lack of institutional follow-up and the system's focus on "the cure" over lifelong consequences [1].Advocating for systemic changein cancer care and follow-up protocols, using his own experiences and documentation as a "blueprint" for improvement [1].Providing resources and informationfor other long-term survivors facing similar challenges, ultimately aiming to prevent others from falling through the cracks of the current healthcare system [1].Highlighting the perspective of the patient/survivoras a crucial component of understanding and improving the entire cancer survivorship experience [1].
The main goals of Joseph Perusic's "Survivor One" project are centered on systemic change, advocacy, and creating a supportive archive for other survivors of cancer and treatment side effects. The primary objectives include:
Systemic Critique and Change:To identify and address the flaws in the current medical system regarding long-term cancer survivorship, particularly the failure to recognize and follow up on late effects of treatment.Archiving Experiences and Tools:To function as a "living archive" of long-term survivor experiences, practical tools, and reflections. This provides documentation of the realities of life after a "cure".Validation and Community:To assure other survivors that they are not alone in feeling "dismissed, unheard, or reduced to a diagnosis," and to provide a space where their experiences are valued.Improving Quality of Life:To advocate for improved quality of life and "mercy" for survivors who face ongoing complications, ensuring they do not have to "pay for mistakes" made by the system.Preventing Future Issues:To use his own story and the collected data as a "blueprint" for better care protocols, so that other survivors do not have to face the same struggles alone
