Sharing Hope: 11 Years After Kidney Cancer

Hi everyone,
I wanted to share my experience in hopes of bringing some encouragement. It’s been 11 years since I was treated for kidney cancer. My cancer was in my right kidney, and I had a radical nephrectomy, including removal of my kidney and adrenal gland. The tumor was 10 cm in size, confined to the kidney, stage 2, grade 2.
I’m happy to say that I’m doing very well now and have had no recurrence over these 11 years. I know a kidney cancer diagnosis can feel overwhelming, but I hope my story can offer some hope: long-term positive outcomes are possible.
Stay strong and be gentle with yourself—take things one day at a time.

Another "Hoo-Ray" to you. It's great that some of us old-timers come back to say hang in there to the newbies. Mine got started in 2006 when I made a comment to my newly assigned Dr. In quick order I had my labs with a urinalysis, then an ultrasound. Then lot's more appointments with an oncologist, then with surgical (kidney and liver) and medical (drug trials). Followed by surgery to remove: R. Kidney; paracaval lymph nodes, 2/11 positive; L lobe of liver (positive); lots of cysts from R lobe of liver, negative; gall bladder and bile duct (congenital defect). I was in the OR for 11 1/2 hours, got out in 6 days. Follow ups were no drugs as Sorafinib and Sunitinib were still in trials and it was deemed not appropriate. Two more single nodes were removed over the following 2 years and I have been tested until the cows come home since that time. In November of 2023, my Oncologist determined that my uneventful previous 15 years made it un-necessary to his office from then on. !!!!more cheers. Now I just gt to my Nephrologist/High BP Doc; a rapidly turning over MD/NP or whoever can see me/ one became a hospitalist, one died, NP was at least able to renew Rx's, and have an appt. with a New Doc in Town; and those other specialists we see in the aging portions of our lives-heart-eyes-hearing-dentists, etc.
It will be 20 years in 2026; I've been able to watch my grands grow up. The 2 boys are out of college and employed; the oldest granddaughter is married and just returned from a trip to NY; and we (son & d-i-l) head to San Francisco this weekend to watch the youngest play university Volleyball. Go Beavers! And I still go to work 5 days a week and keep up the house and grounds. Life is Good.
