Motivation in remission

Hello, my name is Judith. Couple months ago I've survived stage 2 Hodgkin's Lymphoma. I feel almost like new person in terms of being able to do things like I used to before I went through chemo, but I'm having a bit of trouble with going back to normal life routine. I feel very alone these days and lost - many people that were close to me left me when I had cancer and, although I have great people in my life, I have this fear that everyone will eventually just leave me. I feel more distant to my friends, like I don't have anyone that understands me.

Another problem for me, it happens especially when I wake up from sleep, is that I have this fear of death and that whatever I do is irrelevant because I am alone in this world and nothing is important. I feel very ungrateful bc I'm finally healthy, but all of it feels very heavy. I have the need to go out and hang out with my friends every day and on the days that I don't have any hangouts i feel sad and alone.

I plan on going to therapy soon, but does anyone have any tips on finding motivation and safety in themselves in the meantime? I want to enjoy my days because it's a gift being alive, but I'm just not feeling myself lately.

Sorry to hear this. What did you love engaging in before diagnosis? That has not changed. You may be4 called in a different direction. As to friends who have puled away, offer them an opportunity to re-establish contact with you. We often do not know how to interact with others who are sick. When they hear "cancer" they may not know how to deal with that. I have heard from comments ranging from "Oh, you'll be fine" to "You're going to a better place." I would rather they ask me about my journey, as it is a part of life.

Do you have a world view, belief system or other cultural or spiritual practice If so, now is the tie to dig in. We are body and spirit and both need to be well. As to energy and motivation, our marrow has been damaged and that effects a change in our level of energy. Simple exercise, walking, bicycling, exercising at home can work wonders for energy levels. You might think of yourself as being a life researcher. Your task is to search for a method which works for you, and may well help others.
