sex after treatment for HPV P16+ cancer - for married & single ex-patients

Are there any restrictions on sex (in a committed hetero relationship) after treatment? Is there any evidence that post-Tx sexual relations can cause a reoccurrence of HPV16+? Also - for patients treated for HPV16+ who are not married & single - were they to have multiple female partners - is there a risk of reoccurrence for HPV16+ tonsillar cancer? for non-married ex-HPV16+ patients?

* My med. onc. was part of the study where they just dropped it mid-study as their results showed that spouses (usually women given the male prevalence of HPV16+) were at no greater risk than anyone in the general population - hence why the dropped the research study.

Hello, ChiefProton, and welcome to the CSN H&N discussion forum.

I would think that the percentage of risk has not changed. I believe it would remain constant except if someone has and active skin change or If you're actively developing genital warts or notice skin changes, like discoloration, bumps, or sores, you should check in with your doctor before being active.

Here is an article that covers the subject very well though not that long of a read…

Also, there was quite a lengthy discussion on this forum previously, in 2013, and it is covered quite well from a personal aspect right here from our folks on CSN H&N. There are 2 pages of discussion at the bottom, click page 2.

I would also recommend you check out the Superthread at the top of the head and neck home page there is loads of information in there with links and you will find it helpful.

Also, here is one more site that covers the subject quite well with a video top center that is very informative …

I hope this information helps you, and I think the on-site discussion from previous years helps.

I had the same questions, as did my wife. Her OB doc was super understanding and gave her a bunch of information. Told her they would start checking her for HPV in her annuals but since we have been together since 09 and nothing has come up abnormal on her stuff we should be fine. Being newly diagnosed this is all such a whirlwind to me

@MrTweed - Eric Sherman & colleagues at MSK did a study that was dropped when they found no correlation btwn pts. getting HP16+ cancer and their spouse getting it or be susceptible to HPV16+ cancers. Your data matches my wife and I for the same duration which again points to Sherman et al. @MSK dropping that study. A search in PubMed or other might turn up a conference note or other quick write-up as negative findings are just as important as finding a + relationship. Where are you getting treated & with what methods/protocols? I recommend a major center of excellence over any local hospital using photon machine-gun radiation.

I’m at the mercy of the Veterans Administration here in Alaska who has kicked me downtown for the entire treatment. I have PET scan tomorrow and Radiology Oncology consult Friday and Chemo doc on Tuesday.
