2 cm Kidney Mass

Hi everyone.

The VA found a 2 cm mass on my husband's right kidney during an US. His CT is scheduled for the end of the month. He is 33, very athletic-he is a competitive strongman-among other things. They only found it because he had protein in is urine. We have 5 kids. So, I am a mess. I am just trying to find some support.

I was married prior, and he was diagnosed with colon cancer at 33 and passed away at 35. My oldest 4 kids are from that marriage. So, to say I am having all the feelings is an understatement. Someone please give me some peace on this not being as bad as my mind is telling me.

hi. I just completed treatment for a newly discovered 2.5x1.7cm cancer. I was scheduled for a robotic partial nephrectomy on Dec 5, and the margins were positive, meaning he didn’t get it all. I waited 3 months and had more X-rays and another Dr visit. I’m cancer free as of 2 days ago.
Clear cell renal carcinoma is usually very slow growing, very treatable with surgery and if still present then crypablation where they freeze the tumor under X-rays guidance. If that doesn’t work and cancer is still present they can take the whole kidney without untoward effects. Your other kidney just works harder. If you’re comfortable with it, please feel free to call me at +17163784427. My name is Mark and I’m 73 years old

I was told a had a 3.8 cm renal mass hight suspicious for RCC on ultrasound, CT eventually showed a normal variant dromedary hump. My fingers are crossed for you and your family, the wait for the CT was very hard.

I had microscopic traces of blood in my urine when I had a physical in late 2013. My PCP referred me for a CT scan thinking I had kidney stones. It showed a 1.5 cm lesion suspicious for renal cell carcinoma. I was fortunate enough to get a referral to the cancer center at Staford, where I had an incredible urologic oncologist. At my first appointment ent, my wife and I had a million questions and h3 answered them all, as well as a lot we didn’t know to ask. His recommendation was, since it was so small, to go through active surveillance. That meant alternating CT scans with ultrasounds every six months. That was (and I believe still is) the standard of care for lesions that size. But he also said he could arrange to have it taken out if I couldn’t handle the thought of cancer inside me. Amazingly, I chose the surveillance. It was not until April, 2016 that an ultrasound showed a bit of growth, from the initial 1.5 cm to 1.7 cm. So, he arranged for me to see a surgeon. In June, 2016, a had a robotic assisted partial nephrectomy. The surgeon removed about 1 cubic inch of my right kidney. The procedure took about three hours including, I’m told, some excitement from a fire alarm. I was released the next day when I could prove I could pee. Total time from admission to discharge was 25-1/2 hours, which amazed me. Recovery was pretty easy for me, with minimal pain. But I’ve seen others post about a great deal of pain, so your mileage may vary. I took it slow, mainly focusing on walking every day. I got back to the gym and strength training in September, but I was cleared in August. I had annual scans for five years that showed no recurrence, and I plan on asking my primary to refer me for another ultrasound every few years, just to be safe. The pathology on my lesion showed it was chromophobe type and I found that it grows very slowly, rarely spreads and almost never recurs. In terms of kidney function, mine has actually improved post-surgery.

Getting the diagnosis was a punch in the gut, but the doctors I had made the process understandable and comforting. The nursing staff there was also amazing. The folks here on this website also provided a lot of support. I think your husband will come through this with flying colors.

Please feel free to message me if you need any more information.

Hi lnmiller - breathe, and keep breathing. It sounds simple but I remember times of realizing I was not breathing in my anxiety. I can't offer anything medically, but I know you must be so worried and stressed trying to figure this out, taking care of your family, and remembering the experice with your first husband. Keep yourself healthy. Please keep posting here - it's a site I didn't find until a year after my diagnosis and surgery and could have used the support and information sooner. How are you and your family doing now? Take care ~

    Hi Jazz,

His story sounds a lot like mine, except for that part about being fit! 2cm is very small, and from what I have read and understand from my own treatment, these tend to grow slow. You have time to figure it out. This doesn't mean it will go the same way as before.

Sending you the good mojo, vibes and prayers.
