Were Implants During Radiation Affected

I had a lumpectomy & radiation for 6 weeks. Since then my breast that had radiation has gotten a capsular contraction. Has anyone had to have implant replacement after radiation? I’ve got this weird thought in my mind that maybe the cancer might come back if air gets in there. Has anyone experienced replacement?

Re: Capsular Contracture After Radiation - Seeking Advice

    Good Afternoon Netster99,

I understand your concerns about capsular contracture after radiation and the possibility of cancer recurrence. It's natural to have these anxieties following your breast cancer treatment.

Here's some information that may be helpful:

    • Capsular Contracture:
      • This is a common complication after breast implant surgery, especially when radiation therapy is involved.
      • It occurs when the scar tissue around the implant tightens, causing the implant to become hard, painful, and misshapen.
      • The severity of capsular contracture can vary.
    • Cancer Recurrence:
      • Capsular contracture itself does not directly increase the risk of cancer recurrence.
      • However, regular breast exams and imaging studies (such as mammograms) are crucial for early detection of any potential recurrence.

    What to do:

    • Consult with your plastic surgeon: Discuss your concerns about capsular contracture with your plastic surgeon. They can assess the severity of your condition and discuss potential treatment options, which may include:
      • Observation: In some cases, no immediate intervention may be necessary.
      • Revision surgery: This may involve removing the existing implant and inserting a new one, sometimes with a capsulectomy (removal of the scar tissue).
    • Discuss your concerns with your oncologist:
      • Discuss your concerns about cancer recurrence and any necessary follow-up care.
      • Adhere to your recommended screening schedule, including regular breast exams and imaging studies.

    Remember:

    • This is a common concern. Many women who have undergone breast reconstruction after radiation experience some degree of capsular contracture.
    • There are treatment options available.

I understand that this can be a worrying time. I encourage you to prioritize your well-being and reach out to your healthcare providers with any questions or concerns.

I hope this information is helpful.
