Insurance issues

Hello. I am here on behalf of my sister who has Neuroendocrine Carcinoma with mets to both ovaries and liver. When this recurrence happened in April of this year her company let her go due to performance issues. She now has Cobra insurance that is good until December. She is collecting unemployment which is her primary income since June. She has been told to apply for Medicaid but she does have some savings. What do people do in situations like this?
