Post Surgery Concerns

I am new to the forum and am 3 weeks post robotic prostatectomy. I am having "issues" that I am trying to determine if they are normal or if I should seek some additional help. Specifically, I dribble a few (5-6) drops of blood nearly every time I start to urinate. My urine appears clear after the initial few drops, but it doesn't seem to be letting up. The doctor thought I might have a UTI. I went for a urinalysis, and it showed elevated WBCs. However, the culture results did not show an infection. They started me on a broad spectrum antibiotic regardless, but the blood continues. It is not a lot, but it is still freaking me out a bit. Has anyone else experienced this?

    Hi,

Usually a high white blood count means that your body is fighting some kind of infection. How long have you been on the antibiotics? Running a fever? Is the blood bright red? Sometimes it takes a few days for the medicine to kick in. If your still not happy after several days on the antibiotics then maybe a second opinion from another doctor/hospital network might be a wise thing.

No need to be overly concerned at this time. Let the antibiotics do their work. If it continues, then some additional investigation may be warranted.

Thanks for the response! I have been on antibiotics for 5 days. No fever or chills, and the blood is generally bright red. Spoke with the nurse last night, and they want me to finish my antibiotics tomorrow and then if not better, get another urinalysis.

Thanks for the response! I'm hoping the antibiotic will start to do the trick. They are going to retest my urine later this week if I'm not better.

IIf the antibiotics aren't the solution, they might want to do a cystoscopy. Nothing like sticking a camera in there to see what's going on. It's an outpatient procedure done in your urologist's office.
