Unknown Primary, what to do?

My mother, 72, recently had a liver biopsy because a lung xray showed a mass on her liver. The mass measures 9cm x 7cm. Her PET scan shows this to be cancer but no other cancer can be seen anywhere else. Her oncologist says the biopsy shows it it secondary cancer with unknown primary and referred her to a liver surgeon. The surgeon says she thinks it is primary liver cancer but she can't operate until the tumor is shrunk. My mother is now scheduled to get a port and start chemo. Nothing I've read is positive about this. Does anyone have any experiences like this they can share?
