Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center is a cancer research and treatment center located in Buffalo, New York. Founded by surgeon Roswell Park in 1898, the center was the first in the United States to specifically focus on cancer research.

One thing that is unique in Head and Neck cancer and a very unwanted condition is Osteoradionecrosis (ORN), or bone death. Osteoradionecrosis develops as irradiation diminishes the bone’s ability to withstand trauma and avoid infection.

Essentially, the radiation destroys some of the very small blood vessels within the bone. These blood vessels carry both nutrients and oxygen to the living bone. A reduction in these vessels correlates to a reduction in the bone’s ability to heal itself.

This can lead to bone death in the jaw area and the need to replace the affected area of bone.

Jaw surgery for cancer patients and others can sometimes take several years to be completed, with the patient undergoing multiple procedures to place a prosthetic, secure and attach dental implants and undergo treatment for their disease.

At Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, the entire process can be completed within a single day.

So far, the team has completed 20 Jaw in A Day procedures with the intent to continue refining the process to make it even more accurate and efficient.
