Blood draws after double mastectomy

I’ve read you shouldn’t have blood drawn, blood pressure or IV’s on the arm on the same side as your mastectomy. What do you do if you have a double mastectomy?

    Hi, Nala!

The reason for this is to avoid additional lymphedema risk. If the surgeons took out or damaged lymph nodes as part of your surgery, you have a heightened risk of developing lymphedema down the road. Your surgeon will know the full extent of how your lymph nodes are affected, so they need to advise you on how you should proceed with lab work and BP. It may be that one side is more affected than the other, so they can recommend which side to use. They may also have alternative suggestions.

    Best wishes!!
