daily steroids
Hi All-
I am currently undergoing my second round of chemo. I have a lot of pain from my rectal tumor and it hurts the most when I am sitting in a chair. This has lead to me missing a lot of work. I take morphine, acetominiphine, and gabapentin every day but they only make the pain manageable for staying home and laying on my bed. I've noticed that the first 2 days when I am doing chemo, I have reduced pain, and I assume it is because of the steroids. I am wondering if anyone here has been given a prescription for daily steroids to address pain while undergoing chemo? I don't know if its the kind of drug that would interfere with chemo if taken on a daily basis. I thought I would like to hear from you all before I ask my oncologist about this.
Thanks-
Kelley

I have never been given a daily steroid. I did get a prescription to take it the day before my infusion as extra allergy med when I was taking FOLFOX after I became VERY allergic to oxaliplatin. And I have a steroid mouthwash for when I get mouth sores really bad. Not answering you question, but just pointing out that I have taken steroids outside of infusion. There is the question though if the steroid messes up your sleep. I mean, I know from the mouthsores that pain overrides a lot of other issues. But for me, I get like 0 hours sleep the first night of steroid, and that it takes me almost a week to recoup the sleep loss of first two days

I wonder if there is a steroid cream you could use. But as I type that I realize that my thoughts of how I can't feel anything on my stomach along my incision from liver resection is completely different because your pain is from the inside, whereas my stomach is numb from the outside

Prednisone
I took prednisone for joint and back pain. It helped a lot. But there are long-term effects of steriod use. For me, the prednisone exacerbated heart problems caused by the chemo, so I discontinued using it. But pain is insiduous. Sometimes it seems it is worth making compromises, despite the risks.

Pain
My rectal pain was terrible where it wasn't possible for me to sit comfortably. They put me on protofoam which is a suppository that helped me immensely. Between the tumor and the radiation, my rectal area hurt for quite some time. I've never heard of a steroid directly, but the protofoam has hydrocortisone in it which helped.
