I had double knee replacements Oct 19th 6 months after my last chemo. Two weeks before I had it done I got a pain in my leg that felt like Sciatica but disappeared 4 days before the operation. About 10 days after the operation it started to come back and by the 3 week mark I couldn’t sit stand or walk. The only way the pain lessons is with taking morphine (which was prescribed for my knees) Tylenol 3’s and laying down. As soon as I stand the pain becomes unbearable. They say it is an SI joint that is causing it. They have done a bone scan 2 weeks ago and there are no signs of tumors. I have tried everything from excersise physio massage accupunature and chiopractor. The chiropractor thinks I should get another bone scan. I see my doctor next week but we are going on vacation a few days later for a month. Has anyone had a false neg bone scan? The pain from this is unbearable and the length of time seems way to long for no results. I’m using a pelvic belt around the house to practice for the plane ride but I don’t think it will help much. I just thought it would have disappeared by now.

Can feel like that. I had it and found stretching was the best solution. I dont know if you have two knee replacements too? It might not be good for your knees right now. but I would lay on my back and raise my knees, and then twist them to one side. It stretches the perfect spot for sciatica. It is very painful.

Yes I do that one and a few others two to three times a day. I think it is still too tight in there to reap any benefits just yet. It is the amount of time that it is taking that confuses me.

I had pain in my back and pelvis so I went to a chiropractor. After I told her about my UPSC, she would not touch me without a scan and X-rays. She was afraid the cancer had come back in my bones. All was clear but she could not help me. I finally went back to Green Bay to see my acupressurist who fixed me up just fine. Sure hope you can find some relief!!!
Love,

Yes you are the second person to mention acupressure. When I come back from vacation I think I will try it. My immediate worry is sitting on a plane for 13 hours. Looked at business class but one way was $7000. I just thought that 8 weeks of intense pain that there would have been some change. The chiropractor hasn’t been able to get it to crack and the pain is at the same level. It is a tiny bit looser but he said that the muscles and tendons are severely bruised. This was suppose to be a holiday to look forward to. Last year I was diagnosed two hours before we left on a trip. Had to keep it from my daughter who we were traveling with until the end. I was sooo hoping to enjoy this one. Oh well warrior on lol. I am too stubborn to cancel. My knees on the other hand are doing great in spite of not walking much.

Can you ask your Family doctor for some muscle relaxers for the plane trip? They could be taken once you get on board. Maybe your PCP would have some suggestions. Flexeril comes to mind.

He said that my blood counts are too low and could not take them. My neutrifils and wbc’s have stayed low since my last chemo 7 months ago. Cortisone shots would affect my healing of the knees so that was out too. I appreciate the suggestions from all you ladies. Maybe something will stick....

Have you tried Salonpas? They are antiinflammatory patches. They work for me on back spasms.

Thank you. I will mention it to my doctor. I have tried Celebrex and one other anti inflammatory but so far they haven’t worked but I am ready to throw the book at it now that the trip is only a week away.

They are over the counter. Your doctor may not be familiar with them. I don't know where you live but I buy them at Costco.
I have a sister in law who had a stroke. Her left side is paralyzed and her shoulder is painful because it hangs. She gets relief from the patches too.
You could also try heat. You can buy heat pads that can be heated in the microwave. Bein careful not ot overheat them. Flight attendants could heat them for you. All things to try for your trip

I live in Canada but we have Costco here so I will take a look. My heating pad is my best friend but was thinking of looking for something light weight to take on the plane for them to heat up or even those packets that get hot. These are all good ideas for my toolbox. I’m also bringing a tennis ball that I put on my back and roll slowly against a wall. Every little bit helps or is at least a distraction. I’m also taking my pillow. Thanks again for all the ideas.

Salonpas is not as common in Canada. The sister in law I was talking about is Canadian. My husband is Canadian. I take them up to her. Small world. I think you can find them up there

Thank you. I’ll start looking. It says on the internet that Walmart sells it in Canada.

I'm so sorry you're dealing with this right before a trip. Can you take the heating pad on the plane with you ? I seem to recall that some seats had access to outlets; perhaps your doctor could assist with a note that you needed access for medical reasons. Just a thought... Best wishes, B
p.s. I just looked on Amazon and they sell cordless rechargable heating pads; some have decent reviews. They're not cheap but might be worth looking at.

Awesome! Great idea about the heating pad! I am going on the search for that today! Didn’t know there were cordless ones. I’ll phone the airline if I can’t find one and see if they have outlets for the corded one I have. Thank you!

I wonder if the pain is due to peripheral neuropathy. If you have nerve pain, a prescription of Gabapentin is worth a try. If the pain isn't really bone deep, topical lidocaine cream might work. I buy it in a 4% strength over the counter. Walmart sells their brand of it but I don't like their bottles, which don't let the stuff out. Rite Aid Pharmacy sells one that works better. Aspercreme is sold multiple places, and they have their own version of a lidocaine cream. Just make sure you get the bottle which includes lidocaine as they also make one that doesn't include it. I've had a lot of pain in my legs which might be from peripheral neuropathy and might be from wearing tight leggings and skinny jeans, and it helps me to sleep.

Thanks I will look into the cream. I am already on gabapentin. We upped the dose and it didn’t touch it either.

Wannabe, I am sorry to hear of your pain
I took a 13 hour plane trip to my destination there and 13 hours back and I remember how stiff I was. And I wasn’t suffering from back pain at the time. When I went through chemo, I developed severe SI pain whenever I stood up or walked. I could barely stand in the shower long enough to bathe! I had to sit down frequently and raise my legs to get relief, so I spent a lot of time in a recliner. The only relief that worked were epidural shots strategically spaced between chemo infusions. I will never forget the pain I experienced! I sure hope you get relief soon. I also hope that you have a great vacation. Maybe an epidural shot or two or three will help you.
Warm Regards,
Cathy

It sure sounds like the same pain. I know what you mean about the shower! They won’t let me have any shots until April when they feel that the knees will be fully healed. They say it interferes with healing.

Just want to say thank you to everyone for your responses. This is truly the best forum! I feel the caring and love that is so much appreciated. I never thought that my biggest struggle might not be my cancer itself but the side effects and immune response etc that comes from that. I am So glad that I can share these complaints and get some really great ideas and support.Thank you sisters! May the New Year bring us all promise. Love you all.

Landed in Taiwan last night. i somehow made it through the first 10 hours and then asked if I could lay down somewhere even for 20 min. At first they said that the plane was completely full but then came back and invited me to first class for the last 3 hrs!. Those 3 hours were like gold. We have a 5 hr flight tomorrow to Bali so hope my poor old body can tough it out. Laying down as much as I can. Thank you for asking!
