Heavy bleeding after pelvic ultrasound,
I had a pelvic ultrasound yesterday and had heavy bleeding afterwards. The ultrasound was performed late (6:00pm) on the 4th day of my period, so I was having some bleeding, but definitely tapering off and almost finished with the period, as they typically end on day 5. But within 20-30 minutes after the scan, I flooded through a regular tampon and a 9-hour super long pad combined, and had a very large clot. After that episode, I went back to regular light, end-of-period bleeding and my period ended completely the next day. I am wondering why this scan caused such significant bleeding. The scan itself was extremely painful, not uncomfortable, but very painful. I can’t find any info or mention anywhere of bleeding after an ultrasound, other than mild spotting, regardless of whether you’re on your period or not. Does anyone have any insight or experience with this? The pain and bleeding have me very concerned. Anyone?

It looked like a crime scene
It looked like a crime scene after my pelvic ultrasound. I half expected them to send me to the ER for a blood count, but I guess it must be pretty common, because they didn't and I was fine. I, however, had a prolapsing uterine polyp, that wasn't amused with the procedure. It wasn't amused by my family doctor's attempted pap smear either, but thank god my gyn knew how to handle it. I also had no pain with the ultrasound, although I know many women do.
If you're doing ok now, and will be following up with your doctor for results and next steps, I think that's the important thing. I wouldn't jump to conclusions about what the bleeding means, because all the benign things that go wrong also cause bleeding.

I had light bleeding after
I had light bleeding after mine, but after a day or two I had a lot of pain that was new. it lasted for about a week. My doctor said that’s fairly common bc they can put some pretty good pressure on you and can really torque your muscles. It did eventually go away, thankfully.

Thank you so much forzsazsa1 said:Yes, things like fibroids,
Yes, things like fibroids, which are usually benign, can cause very heavy bleeding. No need to worry yet.
Thank you so much for replying. This is just what I hoped to hear!

Thanks for your reply Wolfera. I too had pain afterwards. I have chronic pelvic pain anyway, as a result of pelvic reconstruction surgery for prolapse 5 years ago, so my exam was extremely painful. I went into the bathroom and balled like a baby when it was over. I tried not to show it during the exam, because the operator offeted to stop and to skip scanning the ovaries due to the pain. I told her to proceed and I would endure it, as this procedure was a no pain no gain situation at this point. I need to know definitively that cancer has not become part of my problem. Too many symptoms to ignore, even though I can make excuses for most of them.
I forgot to ask them how long it takes to get the results back.

I hope you get the all clear soon! i think I heard from my doctor with results in about 4 days, but I’m sure it varies. You can always call and check for the results if it’s been too long.
good luck!
