Thyroid carcinoma to the Lung, no surgery

Hi,
My Uncle was just diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and the Dr. said no further surgeries will help. What can we expect now? I have never had cancer in my family. I will be one of his caregivers. We are waiting for a PET scan and then??? Thanks for any advice.
