Pelvic Fractures
Summer of 2016 I was treated for anal cancer. (T1 NO MO---I was lucky.) I haven’t posted before, but I certainly used the info on this site many times. Thank you so much! I was 76 during treatment and already had mild osteoporosis. Since treatment I’ve had several, pelvic fractures but none since early 2017.
For those of you who’ve had pelvic fractures after radiation, did you continue to fracture? Have you taken osteoporosis medication? I’d appreciate hearing anyone else’s experience. Thanks.

Sorry to hear of your fractures. I have osteoporosis, but no fractures so far, and have not taken any medication for it, despite my specialist's recommendation. My last DEXA scan showed some improvement in my bone density, so he let me continue with no medication until I see him again in 2 years. I hope you will tolerate the medication okay if you decide to take it. Best wishes!

Hi,
I am also sorry to hear of your concern with fractures. While I have not yet had this issue, I do believe we are at a heightened risk for such problems.
Several years ago after a bone density test my doctor prescribed Alendronate (Fosamax) due to osteoporosis. It is in pill form and I take it once a week in the morning on an empty stomach. (When I remember and admit that I often forget as well as took a several month break in trying to evaluate if in fact I was having side effects at one time) But, for the most part I do take it and have not had any negative side effects to speak of. My last density test showed little change from the previous, but at least no worse.
Weight bearing exercise, even walking, and foods high in Vitamin D and Calcium all help to build bone health as well.
I wish you luck and much continued health.

Thanks mp327 and Katheryn.
Thanks mp327 and Katheryn.
In the past, I took Fosamax for about 5 years. I tried it again recently and had unacceptable side effects. I know about the usual recommendations for osteoporosis and always exercised in the past. However, I had the first of my fractures when I was walking on paved, level ground. I got another when I turned over in bed and another in physical therapy. I'm now hesitant to try any sort of exercise. I'll see what my next DEXA scan shows before deciding on medication.

May go to Ottawa Civic Hospital tomorrow and see about ultrasound or xray especially on right leg below knee on thigh. Very painful. Left leg upper thigh bone sore too. Was it from the Radiation Treatments or too much walking on my part. I dont drive big walker at 6'6" tall. Thanks
