stage 3 or stage 4 ??
my Dad (71 Age- Healthy- quit smoking 6 years after bypass heart surgery) have Continues Cough and chest pain from last few month and for the reason he visited physician who examined X-ray,Blood report and he said possible phnumonia and gave medicine for two week. after two week when he has same problem physician ask further test for CT scan. he went for CT scan and it shows SPOT in left lungs as well as on lymphnodes:
The CT findings are::(03/19/2018)
Impression::
-An inhomogeneously enhancing peripheral soft tissue density lesion with spiculated margin in anterior segment of left upper lobe encasign the subsegmental branches of upper lobar bronchus as descibe above suggestive of primary malignant lesion most likely. The lesion measure 7 cm * 3 Cm in axial plane with cranio-caudal extent of 4.3 cm.
-A few enlarged inhomogeneously enhancing lymphnodes in bilateral upper,right lower paratracheal,left paraaortic and subcarinal regions suggest nodal metastases.
-No Evidense pleural effusion or focal liver lesion.
-No evident osseous metastasis.
So from this report dad visited to Oncologist who further ask for PET CT Scan and then biopsy. from above report intially doctor said looks like this is not stage 4 cancer it is on same side .
After PET CT scan done on 03/28/2018 it shows Impression below:
Impression::
-hetrogeneously enchancing hypermetabolic spiculated lesion in peripheral aspect of anterior segment of upper lobe and superior lingula of left lung - metabolically active possible Primary malignancy.warrants histopathological correlation.(lesion measure about 4 * 7.6 * 5.4 cm and reveals intense FDG uptake(SUVmax:21.3)
-Few hyeterogeneously enhancing FDG avid and non avid nodes in peri-vascular,left hilar,pre-para tracheal,left TO groove and Pre-sub carinal Regions -- lymph nodal metastasis. (node in perivescular region measure about 2.5*1.1*1.5 cm and reveald mild FDG uptake(SUVmax:3.7)
-hypermetabolic nodule in apical segment of upper lobe of right lung- metabolically active metastasis.which measure about 0.9*0.7*0.8 cm and reveals moderate FDG uptake(SUVmax:7.9).
Now we are waiting for biopsy report. PET Scan report shows nodule in right lungs too. other body part is not spreaded from the report. it is very hard to understand these report language so i am worried it is stage 4 cancer or what?. he is very healthy and from look i can not imagine he has a lung cancer.
if anyone understand this CT & PET scan report impression, please explain me in simple way. after PET scan nodule seen in right lung and lesion in left lung i hope he dont have stage 4. if anyone has situation related please help me.

Lung Cancer Staging
Harish, I have the same type lung cancer as your dad, Non Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) Squamous Cell Carcinoma. Here is a link for determining stages of lung cancer: https://www.cancer.org/cancer/non-small-cell-lung-cancer/detection-diagnosis-staging/staging.html. The good news is that even stage IV is not necessarily a death sentence. On Inspire.com, you'll find very many long-term survivors.
God bless you and your family.
