standard of care for 1B mixed Tumor
Hi. I lost a friend recently to lung cancer. He had been dx with stsge 1B lung cancer, mixed tumor. the doctors did not recommend adjuvant chemo or rads. He had bone pain before and after the surgery, which worsened. Two years later, his PCP recommended an MRI on his leg, where they found a huge tumor, mets from lung cancer. Subsequent scans found multiple brain mets. He died shortly after these discoveries after trying chemo and rads...but too late.
Has anyone here had stage 1 B and what is the standard of care?

Stage 1b is variable when it comes to added treatment. Depending on size, invasion, etc. Many 1bs do NOT get chemo or radiation. Was he treated at a cancer center?
If it was stage 1B, the size was small and there was no spread , right? Isn't there a standard of care according to stage similar to other cancers?

Usually chemo and/or
Usually chemo and/or radiation is ONLY recommended if the tumor is over 4cm. Anything smaller than that has shown to be of no benefit to have chemo/rad and can, in fact, do more harm than good in early stage. Keep in mind, there is a 20-30% chance of recurrance, even in early stage, however, the risk outweighs the benefits at Stage 1a or b. Hope thie helps. Also, that is why cancer is so insidious. They may think they got it all, but it pops up somewhere else. There is no test to determine who this will happen to. I am very sorry about your friend.
