Excessive mouth mucous during last stages of chemo/radiation tx.
I have stage 3 EC, and have had a lot of thick mouth mucous during this last week of 6 week treatment. It can gather around the tumor and cause distress and hiccups unless I spit it out. It seems to signal nausea onset but not always. Am taking Zofran and Promethazine gel. I hydrate PO and feeding tube often as I can. Any suggestions for relief..?

Hi Mike - Have chosen to answer you in more detail on a separate topic forum here: https://csn.cancer.org/node/312810
So many have questions about "mouth maintenance" that I chose to share my own experience with chemo treatments and suggestions that were helpful to me."
I know you mentioned "thick mouth mucous" and sometimes problems with nausea. Hope something I have said might be helpful.
Wishing you all the best,
Loretta

Thanks Loretta. I finished chemo Monday and radiation yesterday. Side effects are probably at or near their worst, of which mucous is only one. No mouth sores, just chapped lips. Pain from the tumor limits my sleeping positions, already limited by the feeding tube. Will hang in there and have faith. I appreciate your reply, kind words, and suggestions.

Hi there. My husband has
Hi there. My husband has stage 2B EC. He has just completed chemo and radiation therapy. He also suffers from excessive mouth mucus. In fact it seems to regurgutate up from the stomach area and into sinus cavities and mouth. He is unable to pass food or fluids thru his stomach, therefore he has to spit/ vomit it out . It also sets up a gag refex which causes him to vomit. He has not found anything that helps this at this point. He has a j-tube for hydration and nutrition. Has this improved for you at all? We are hoping that it will stop or slow down with the completion of chemo/ radiation.

Tussin DM
My father is going through this right now and I gave him Tussin DM. Amazingly it thins the mucous. It does not stop it completely, but does help quite a bit.

Excessive mouth mucous
My husband started to have the mucous issue which caused such severe gagging/voimting he couldn't drink/eat and ended up in the hospital from dehydration. They gave him Flonase and after about three days, his problem has almost disappeared. It might be worth a shot to try it as you can buy it over the counter or ask your doctor for a prescription. Good luck

Mucous
My husband is newly in his treatment with 3 days of chemo and several rounds of rads at this time. He is also having some trouble with excess mucous! He has to spit it out! Because his esophagus is so narrow from stage 3 tumor, I am also terrified what would happen if he did have to vomit? Aspiration and choking concerns! I am going to ask about mucinex at Fridays visit! I only have severe allergies and have trouble witth mucous in sinuses! The doc has me take mucinex and it helps! Hope you folks get some relief!
