Rising PSA

It's been a couple of years since I last visited this discussion board.  I had a davinci RP back in 2010 and subsequent PSA tests have shown a slight rise in my PSA since 2015.  For years 2010 through 2014, my PSA was .01, but the last three years it's gone from .04 (2015), .05 (2016) and now it's .07.  Is this cause for alarm?

    Hi,

    If I were you I would be concerned, not alarmed about the rise in PSA.  Work with your doctor, anything above .2 is considered a re-occurance of the cancer from what I have learned.  See what your doctor has to say about investigating the rise over the last three years.

    HudsonBob, I agree with Clevelandguy, the consistent rise over the prior 3 years is concerning. I'm sure you are planning to ask your oncologist the significance of the rise especially considering these are very low PSA levels which may not trigger any action at this point. But I don't  know. I think it would be helpful if you post his/ her response on this discussion board for better understanding of how oncologists/ urologists respond to these situatons when using the ultra sensitive PSA test. Not all doctors use the ultra sensitive test. This includes my doctors at MD Anderson which is considered a respected major institution. So I'm not sure why every institution  doesn't use the same testing protocol.

    In any case thanks for your post and I hope your situation remains stable.

    Hi Bob, or is it Hudson?  My PSA has just come back 17 years after Radical Prostatectomy.  Severl months ago .3 then 3 months later .6 then 3 more months and .9   Great and caring MD referred me to oncologist who says next time it doubles to 2.0 it will be time to start to treat.  Intends to use Lupron.  I became very concerned and thought surgical might be better.  MD says try chemical first.  Recent PSA showed not a rise, but dip to .08.  So I am like you, waiting...waiting.  Good luck, each of our good MD‘s and good oncologist’s will hopefully get both of us along the right path.  Wishing you the best!

    I go by Bob (from Hudson, NH).  My numbers have risen since going to a new PC and their lab.  I'm going to have another PSA at different lab to see if the results are the same.  My PC says don't worry (easy for her to say).  I don't like the idea of taking Lupron for the obvious side effects.
