Curious about scan timing

after your chemo is finished how soon do they usually schedule you for a scan?

I'm 4 wk post my  mop up chemo, have an appointment with my oncologist in a couple of days, and I'm curious how often every ones getting scanned.

Scan

Scan coming up about six weeks off chemo, appointment with surgeon the next Monday and oncologist the following Monday.  They seemed to want some time for the body to normalize before doing the scan.

Speaking of scans:  an article in the WSJ today about the risks of the contrast using in MRIs. It apparently can leave metal in your body that can get into your brain. The contrast really lights up tumors though, so, the risks of not using it maybe greater than the risks of using it for us.

While I have you here, I asked my son how he would go about doing a cure assuming that the technologies exist or will exist in the near future and he did a little block diagram for me. I think that he chatted about it with his boss too. The problem with KRAS is that it's necessary and fragile in one spot and it's inside the cell so you'd have to go after every cell unless there's an unknown tell on the cell surface.

Was About 3 Months

I had two scans on treatment, then about 3 months when done.  Was on 3 month schedule then, and was about to go to 6, when a met started growing.  Popped it out almost a year ago to the day and started spacing them again to 5-6 months after the first clean scan and continuing bloodwork.

About a Month

My chemo ended in September and had my next scan in October.  That was about a year after the initial scan.  Although all doctors are different.

interesting,NH MIke.  I've had numerous CT scans and a couple PET scans but no MRIs. I've been exposed to a great deal of radiation this year.  That's for sure.

I complete my regular Folfox treatments this Friday and already have a follow-up PET scan scheduled for October 4th.  Not sure what is standard protocol but with my reoccurances, they don't want to take any chances.  I will begin maintenance chemo on Oct 6th.

Hi there,

Seems that this depends on the oncologist and also maybe your stage too but I am guessing on the stage part.  My husband just had his follow up scan 1 1/2 weeks after he finished his "mop up" chemo.  I personally am glad it was that soon but I know my husband would have liked a little time between.

My PET scan is about a month

My PET scan is about a month out after the chemo/radiation sessions ended.  I'm scheduled for Friday the 13th, lucky day I hope.  Surgery a couple weeks later and then injection chemo after that.  Don't know if radiation is going to be part of the post surgery treatment or not but I'll find out since the radiation oncologist wants to see me after the PET scan.

Maintenance

Desnee, my onc calls it maintenance chemo but it really is a specific targeted chemo with little side effects over a longer period of time to hopefully kill any remaining cancer cells.  Since my original diagnosis in 2006, the recurrence in 2013, and the recurrence this year they feel we need this in order to keep the cancer at bay.  The maintenance chemo I will have is cyramza.  They told me two months ago that this would be administered every two weeks for the rest of my life.  After more research and consultations with the onc, he plans to begin this every three weeks for at least one year.
