Can you help me find a treatment for metastasised osteosarcoma
Our 18 year old son was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in his leg in late November 2015. After 8 months of chemo and limb-saving surgery to remove the tumour, we were told his chances of survival were very good. Sadly, in July this year a small spot was detected on his lung one week from being 12 months since his last round of chemo. During lung surgery to remove the spot the surgeon found two other microscopic spots in the same lung which had not shown on any CT or PET scans. He removed all 3 spots which proved to be malignant. We have been told to expect the cancer to return within 12 months. Tomorrow we see our son's oncologist following a regular CT scan to see if the cancer has returned yet. I am terrified of what might be.
Four other boys who were being treated at the same hospital as our son for the same cancer are facing a similar situation. One of the boys underwent further chemo after his cancer returned in his lung, but it had no impact on the cancer. He was also told radiation is not an option. He was to have surgery to remove the spots from his lung but unfortunately more spots have appeared on his other lung and surgery is not longer an option.
I am terrified that our son will soon face this situation where our oncologist has no options left to try and save him. I live in Australia and it seems our medical system is very rigid when it comes to trialling new treatments. Are there any credible trials in other countries which might help save our boys. As parents, we are desperate tp find a solution. There has to be something.
