Hi everyone,

I was wondering if I could get some insight on my new mole. I spotted it 2 days ago, it was dark brown and slightly raised. (It's in the middle of both pictures) The first picture is from when I spotted it. And the second picture is from today, I lightly scratched it(itchy) and some of it peeled off. It didn't quite bleed or ooze. Now it is crusted with half of the mole still there, kind of pitted. I am currently waiting for a referral to a dermatologist from my Dr. I am a 23 year old female, family history of melanoma. I'm just nervous as to what it is. I have never had a mole look like this or peel off before.

    see an oncology dermatologist soon

Hi Kelsey:  I had a similar mole biopsied yesterday. Mine existed for 5 years or more, but only turned brown in the last month. I insisted on seeing an oncology dermatologist, who thought it was prudent to do a biopsy, which was not comforting. Online pictures are pretty useless and the research on melanoma shows that even clinicians can misdiagnose. The safest route is to get a biopsy done as soon as possible. And post back when you do. Good luck! The hard part is waiting for the results.

Have concern, but don't worry too much

2 days is a very short time to get worried.    Moles can be a normal thing, I've had moles which have been there 40 years.  I've had a couple of moles removed because they were unsightly in prominent areas.     Scratching it caused the abrasion.

Not every mole needs a biopsy.  After a few days or even a week or two, run it by your family practitioner and see if he just says 'wait a while', or if he/she refers you on.
