Medications post radical nephrectomy?
Hello all who have had a radical nephrectomy! Im scheduled for mine on 5/9/17...not soon enough! My doctor has not really had a discussion with me if any meds such as chemo or immuno therapy will be necessary after surgery. Im assuming that will be determined after the staging is complete. Have any of you had to follow up with any such medications? radiation? just curious....Im wondering if the cancer cell type also dictates too!
Im doing a lot of research and have been bombarded with information: Plant based diets, alkaline water, cannabis oil....ayayayay! So overwhelming!
Needless to say, I am looking forward to starting some major lifestyle changes (diet, excersice, decreasing stress etc)...I need to change this situation into a positive thing.....there is a spanish saying: "al mal tiempo, buena cara"....translation: Put a good face to the bad times...

Hi Bee
After my stage 1 was removed I left hospital with only a prescription for pain killers but didn't need any. If yours is stage 1 or 2 I assume your situation is the same as mine.
I don't know if there are any adjuvant drugs for kidney cancer. Others here will know.
As for lifestyle... I think we just have to do our own research and do what makes sense to us.
The big evils are sugar and industrially produced seed oils (most vegtable oil).
The best we can do is to prepare our own food from the freshest possible ingredients. This means avoiding processed food and fast food too. It's not easy to do in the modern world.
Steve.

Usually, no adjuvant therapy
My information is 4 years old, and it was after a met was removed. (I initially had an agreesive tumor removed pT1b, grade 4 then 6 months later, they found a solitary met in my lung). So, I was very high risk for recurrance at that point (80-90%). But, without a visible tumor, there was no way to see if the medicane is working. Anyway, I am 4 years out and NED. I won.

No meds for me
No meds for me after Kidney removal, I also had two seperate lung surgeries when two small rcc mets popped up in each lung 5 years later. Still no meds after those also. My oncologist tried to push Sutent on me after a recent article in New England Journal Of Medicine showed a possible benifit from taking it to prevent a possible return of rcc, but I refused and it was the right thing to do, my last scans showed Im ned, good luck.

Hi, Bee
You're right, this is a great time to make lifestyle changes about healthier choices.
The especially good news is, right after surgery you get to ease back into most of what you're doing anyway. So having a 47-point self improvement plan will most likely need to get in line after stuff like "get rid of this gas," "take a shower," and "try to wear regular underwear." But at least it'll be in the line and you can incorporate it into your life bit by bit.
I've been mostly vegetarian for more of my adult life than not. That's not to say it was always a healthy, varied vegetarian diet. Pre-surgery, I got a bit more committed to eating a whole food (= not processed) plant based diet. I've found that I'm feeling calmer. Is it due to more whole grains, starches, and taking the time to prepare veggies in new ways? Or is it just me? Beats me, but I do know it's cheaper and more fun to cook and eat this way.
As for alkaline water, supplements, that sort of thing, they do indeed almost always benefit some people. Unfortunately, those people are primarily the folks that manufacture, distribute, and sell those items.
All the best in whatever direction your self care takes next.
