I'm not much of a hugger
But I'm honoured to wish you all a very merry Christmas and a happy new year.
There is a tradition in the north of England and in Scotland that a tall dark stranger will visit the house in the new year. He is given a piece of cake (symbolizing a hope of no hunger in the new year), a silver coin (to ward off poverty) and a piece of coal (Representing hearth and home) and a glass of whisky.
He eats the cake, pockets the coin and throws the coal on the fire. Then with the whisky he toasts the house and family, wishing everybody "Health, wealth and happiness" for the coming year.
It strikes me that this is all very Viking but, nevertheless, I wish you all health, wealth and happiness for 2017.
