Actually it somewhat reminds me of a song made up by soldiers in WWI. I recently collected it with other songs for classroom resources.
And when they ask us
And when they ask us, how dangerous it was.
Oh, we’ll never tell them, no we’ll never tell them
We spent our pay in some café,
And fought wild women night and day,
It was the cushiest* job we ever had
And when they ask us, and they’re certainly going to ask us,
The reason why we didn’t win the Croix de Guerre**.
Oh, we’ll never tell them, oh we’ll never tell them.
There was a front***, I’m damned if we knew where!
Notes
*Cushiest = Easiest
** Croix de Guerre = Cross of war = French medal for bravery
*** Front = Where the actual fighting took place.
It was the closing song of the 1968 Richard Attenborough movie “Oh what a Lovely War”
Footstomper,
Elite group, indeed.
Interesting what you footnoted. Always the teacher! I haven't seen all of "Oh What a Lovely War," only parts of it. Probably should be on my To Watch list?
