My experience
Hi. I am also stage 4 ovarian and 2c breast. I applied for SSDI in January of 2016. I applied over the phone at my local office. I had to escan them copies of my 2015 pay stubs. I received some forms to fill out in the mail. I filled them out and mailed them back the same day. By the end of February 2016 I received a check for the year 2015 because they backdated my eligibility date. I received my first monthly disability check March of 2016. It was fast and easy.
One thing to consider is insurance. You have to wait 2 years from you approval date for Medicare to be effective. I am lucky because I am covered under my employer insurance untill December 31, 2016 and my Medicare takes effect January 1, 2017 because they backdated my SSDI application to January of 2015. They can backdate the eligibility date up to two years so ask if you qualify.
