Food and diet
Just wondering what kind, if any diet changes have been made by everyone. Trying to eat more fruits and veggies. Just hard for me!
Any suggestions??

Diet change can be difficult.
Initially I had intentions of major change- cut this cut that, eat this eat that, but have ended up pretty much eating what I always ate. The only major change I have added is the purchase of a blender and I use this on a regular basis for smoothies - both fruit and the green ones.
Gotta be happy - anything in moderation-right ?

Our oncologist made some basic recommendations
Keep in mind, my husband is currently NED and not on any treatment. So the oncologist made basic suggestions that were not really anything earth shattering.
He suggested moving to a more plant based diet (not totally quitting meat, but limiting it), eating more fruits and vegetabes. I don't buy smoked or processed beef/pork products anymore. I switched to "meat alterntaives" on a more regular basis and my husband quit his diet coke habit for me in the hospital when he was sick. So no soda and only 1-2 beers a day (obviously not every day but that was the recommendation). Since your immune system does have a role in cancer recurrence, I figured why not eat to help it out?
I've just tried to have the mindset that food can be "treatment" for cancer in that getting the right nutrients from fruits and vegetables can play a role in the immune system. I guess we just eat more sensibly now, but not totally on any sort of bandwagon health craze.

I was not told I had to make a changes. I'm lucky because I always loved veggies and fruits and never liked sweets or fried foods. My weakness is carbs like pasta, potatoes, and bread. But as said, in moderation it's all good. I just watch sugar, salt, and saturated fats. Not because of the kidney issue but because they're unhealthy even if we didn't have kidney cancer.

For your kidney it's good to have a low sodium- low protein diet. So salt and red meat should be used carefully. I don't add salt at all when I'm cooking and eat meat maximum once in a month. Fish and chicken have lower amount of protein and can be used frequently.
Suger is considered to feed cancerous cells so it's best to omit it, I've done it, it's not easy to see others eating delicious chocolate cakes but as a cake-adicted I could do it so every one can.
Processed foods, coca, ready-made foods should be avoided. Home made, fresh foods could be your best friends.
Low fat foods help to loose weight and be fit which is good for everyone.
The juice isn't good as it doesn't have fiber but fruits and Smokies are good. Some fruits have more antioxidant which make them good cancer fighters.
Green tea is good because of having antioxidant, and olive oil has omega 3 so it's good for everyone

All great suggestions for everyone not just us. also trying to drink more water and I quit the diet drinks too.

The sugar feeding cancer
The sugar feeding cancer cells argument is really not very well supported by scientific data. The Mayo Clinic has this to say about it:

That said, it's not healthy to consume large amounts of sugar. We do need to watch anything labeled low fat as usually added sugar is used to make up for loss of taste when fat is reduced.

It's next to impossible to eat true low sodium diet
If you read labels carefully, aside from fresh fruits and vegetables, it's almost impossible to eat "low sodium"
Even fresh meat like chicken often has a solution of sodium injected into it before you even open the package. Some BREAD even has too much sodium for 'true low sodium."
I gave up on this a long time ago, it made my head spin. I just try to do what is suggested above in most posts (with the exception of sugar since I"m not convinced of that arguement that it feeds cancer)

3 1/2 years required weekly pizza and beer parties to celebrate still being alive. I have never been a special diet fan. Again, nothing we did to get this cancer was our fault. Adding broccolli to our diet now also won't save our lives. One thing for sure is that now that I'm nivo, I have an amazing appetite and everything tastes great! Being able to consume a couple thousand calories a day is like heaven. So no matter what I eat, it has to be good for me. Especially since I'm still 40 pounds under weight.
