Best Kidney Cancer Doctors
Hi everyone,
I'm trying to find out who the leading kidney cancer doctors are worldwide (presumably the US), for treating kidney cancer. Specifically this cancer has metastasized to the liver.
Travel and money is not an issue.
I've done a lot of googling, but any first hand suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for any help and guidance you can offer!

Top 20 Cancer Treatment Hospitals in the USicemantoo said:Best KC doctors
avenjon,
For starters look into Cleeland Clinic.

Here’s a list of the top ranked cancer treatment centers in the United States in 2014/2015. I had my surgery done at MSK by Dr. Russo, so of course I’m biased, but as you can see, there are others that scored high. Of course, rankings must always be taken with a grain of salt, depending on what factors were counted in the rating. Given that, here are the top five and the remaining 15 are listed in the table in the article
-
Memorial Sloan Kettering

University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston
-
Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota
-
Dana-Farber/Brigham in Boston
-
Johns Hopkins, Baltimore

Edit: For some odd reason link takes you only to a login page so I copied the whole table.

Los Angeles Area
I suggest you look at these guys. They are all RCC specialists in the Los Angeles area.
Dr. Figlin at Cedars Sinai (formerly of UCLA and City of Hope and has been studying and specializing in Kidney Cancer for 30 years) is a recognized national leader in this field. He's probably the top RCC specialist in Southern California. He's chair of the hematology and oncology and also one of the editors of the Kidney Cancer Journal (or used to be).
Dr. Quinn at USC. He's the director of the Norris Cancer Hospital at USC's Keck school of Medicine. Also a top RCC specialist.
Dr. Pal at City of Hope. Co-directory of the kidney cancer program at City of Hope.
If I had to pick one to see, I'd see Dr. Figlin. He's done research and concentrated on RCC for about 30 years. However, all three are experts in RCC. I'd trust any of them with my treatment.

Finding RCC SpecialistsAvenjon said:Thanks thats great. Is that
Thanks thats great. Is that specifically for kidney cancer, or just cancer in general?
I'm just guessing, but I think those are for cancer in general. I doubt there is a list for RCC. If there is, I'd be interested in seeing it! To find RCC specialists, I think you have to look to names on research papers and panels at the kidney cancer seminars. Perhaps get your hands on some of the kidney cancer journals to see who is publishing/doing studies. I'd look for who has been active the longest in research circles concentrating mainly on RCC. There aren't that many I'd guess. It would be great if everybody that is seeing a specialist that concentrates on treating/doing research on RCC would post the name and institution of who they know. It's kind of hard to find people any other way. If you need someone in a specific area, I'd suggest reaching out to someone in another area and asking for a referral in the geographic area you are interested in. The docs doing this research know who is involved and where they are. It might be worth it to just get in touch with one and ask them. You can even look for trials of RCC drugs (there's a centralized website for drug trials), then search for the contact in your area. Usually those are docs involved with RCC treatment/research.
My own research found that when you get to the few people that are heavily involved in the research and keeping up with the disease, their opinions don't vary too much from doc to doc with regards to treatment. They are pretty much bound to either treating you according to protocol (which is well defined by NIH/National Cancer Center), or getting you into a drug trial/study (which are heavily publicized). Now, the availability of trials varies a great deal from area to area and the researchers themselves knows which studies are coming up. This is an area that changes quickly and makes it more dependent on who you talk to.

Yes, that was just for cancer in general. My doctor at MSK was Dr. Paul Russo. If you go on the MSK website you can select kindey cancer then see all the doctors' who specialize in RCC bio, publications, etc. I would imagine other hospitals are the same way.

Not that it makes much of a difference but the most recent list is from 2014/15 and MSK is now number 1. But really, it's a minor issue.

One important factor can be the type of RCC. There are certain centers more experienced with the rare types.

I think your question got lost in the posts about best facilities.
If money and travel is of no importance, you need to know the best KIDNEY CANCER EXPERTS in the country. It doesn't matter if they are at a tiny teaching hospital or a big facility.
Dr. Figlin at Cedars Sinai in Los Angeles
Dr. Hans Hammers (google him for location)
NIH (National Institute of Health) of familial cancer is suspected

Cant help you
Sorry I can't help you with doctors, and I am even more sorry that you have to look. I like my doctor in Portland Oregon, he is a cancer research doctor, who also works in Hematology. I don't know if he is the best but he is certainly the best for me.

Some leading doctors at NIH have offered to help, should I become disatisfied with my present treatment.

Dr. Hans Hammers is going to be leaving Hopkins to head to UTSW sometime in May. That probably takes Hopkins off the list of places you want to go, but puts UTSW in Dallas pretty high up the list.

With all respect, I don’t think the original question got lost. Cancer treatment hospitals have links to kidney cancer along with all other cancers. And you can go there and read about the doctors and their specialization (RCC, chromophobe, etc.), biographies, publications, and so on. It’s a good place to start and find someone who would be best for you. For instance, MD Anderson treats over 700 kidney cancer patients a year. Makes sense that they would have incredibly experience physicians. But I agree with Mark; the best doctor is the one that’s best for you. The lists are simply a way to start reading about who might be best for you. I did recommend Dr. Russo at MSK but of course I'm biased since he's best for me.
