The Foob Report

Many of you know that I had a bilateral prophylactic mastectomy with no reconstruction back in January.  Since my surgery, I’ve been just “going flat” and loving the comfort and ease of not wearing a bra.  Every morning, I just throw on a shirt and go.

But…I am very fortunate to have excellent health insurance, and I happen to live 2 miles from a large, woman-owned store for post-mastectomy supplies.  I am lazy and low-maintenance when it comes to my appearance, so I know I’ll never wear forms every day, but I decided I wanted to know what my options might be.

The fitter I met with “got me” right away, and showed me very small lightweight forms just to give me a little shape, and comfortable cotton bras.  And I was really surprised – I do like how they help balance out my large belly, and make my shirts fit better.  But it’s subtle enough that I don’t think my co-workers are going to greet me with “OH MY GOD, YOUR BOOBS GREW BACK!”

I had just a small copay after insurance, so I figured, why not give it a try?  I should be able to pick up the forms and bras in a few weeks, and then I'll just see how I feel wearing them.

If anyone is interested, I ordered this form, in a size 4 (they go up to 14):

and this bra:

I fear the term “leisure bra” translates to A Bra Old Ladies Wear to Sleep In, but I don’t care – it’s really, really comfortable!

I love your attitude.  You just seem to roll with the flow.  I realize life isn't always easy, but your approach and how you deal, as well as your self acceptance, is just so positive.  Having these qualities, along with your sense of humor, must make life so much more enjoyable.

    Leisure bra

Traci, you made me laugh with your comment about old ladies. For years, my sisters and I made fun on our mom for wearing this type of bra and now I wear them too! Funny when things come full circle like that!

    Foobs

I have another friend who refers to her prostheses as foobs.  In fact, she had a single mastectomhy 12 years ago and just had the other one removed in July  because she was so uncomfortable with her huge prosthesis and going without it was not only uncomfortable, but unsightly (she was large breasted).  Here's what she now wears.  http://www.bosombuddy.com/  It sounds similar to what you've done.  She wears a regular comfortable bra and inserts the foob in the cup.  I've seen them and they're very soft and seem like they would be comfortable.  I do imagine it might be more work to "match" an existing breast, but for someone with a double mastectomy, she is symmetrical and comfortable - after 12 years of struggling with this huge heavy thing (a regular although supposedly lightweight, prosthesis).

Hope this is a good resource for anyone who is interested.  I know 2 women now who are very happy.
