SurprisedAfter all of this, during the past 36 hours my throat has gotten to point I cannot speak, or just barely audible.. Except for the discomfort maybe not all that bad.  I naver have been exactly a chatty socialite, as you guys can probably tell.  More hoarse than when I initially visited the ENT and was diagnosed in July.

    No voice

My husband lost his voice for about 2 weeks and it did eventually come back. He would also lose it following bouts of nausea. Try not to worry about it overmuch...even though the tendency is to worry about every new thing. You did a great job getting through your treatment...all treatment is tough and it's not unusual for side effects to pop up sometimes days, weeks, months later. Hang in there  Mokus! Also if you are concerned put a call in to your docs.

    Hoarse

No matter what time of day I answer the phone, people always ask if they woke me. Hey, it takes a while for my voice to warm up for talking!

Some things to keep in mind:

It takes a long time to heal from H&N treatment.

If you don't drink enough water or if you breathe through your mouth,  your throat will dry out and become irritated. Try some of the remedies on the super thread.

You might be more susceptible to thrush, so check with your doctor if your throat really starts to hurt.

Your voice may have a new normal tone.

Just about any symptom you have, someone here will be able to help you with it. ☺

Ty for this and for making yourself available for consult.  I am really not good with conversation.  Issues relating to my Aspergers. I am unable to utilize any of the rinse/gargle remedies as anything like that causes immediate gagging for me.  Always has.  Could never do things like Listerine, Pepto Bismol or any alcohol substance.  My throat doesn't really "hurt" so much as itch.  I think I have caught a couple small sores on the back of my tongue tickling me that is causing the cough. Everytime I huff out a good cough a wad of yuck jumps out of my throat.

Alos, despite all the care I took to keep my neck moisturized and treated after each radiation session, I messed up and backslid my routine after the treatments started and now my neck is starting to peel from the burns.  I am wrapped up with salve and bandages likethe mummy tonight and will strip it all off and resume my regular routine of salves oils and ointments for another ten days or so.

    ty for your help

    Sorry for hearing you are

Sorry for hearing you are suffering these. I have less idea on throat pain which I am also suffering now (two weeks after treatment). As to the skin burn, it will definitely get better soon. I had really bad burn after treatment and the nurse gave me some dressing with Vaseline. I used it every night after putting lotion. It helped a lot and in one week neck becomes much better with old skin peeling out, but new skin seems becoming mature.

Hope you are getting better soon.

Mokus and John you brought something I forgot

John when reading your post I remembered something. As most here know they took my whole larynx so I don't have any vocal cords so you would think there is nothing to strain. I can't strain my vocal cords as I don't have them, but I still can strain my voice if I talk for a long time and my throat dries out. It did once and I thought thats strange as I don't have vocal cords so how is this happing. There is some small folds in the throat where it is very narrow and that is what vibrates for me. That is how my doctor's explained it anyway. If I let my throat get too dry I can almost lose my voice so I have to sip water if I an going to talk much. It will change the pitch even. Then thetr is times when I get the opening which I divert my air so I can talk gets mucus covering it and I can't talk until I clear it with....Water.

So with that I will sugest you sip water on and off all day and see if it gets better. They say you need to drink one half your weight in onces of water.  So say a 200 lb person should drink 100 onces of water.

    Throat issues

I am 1 week post tx and my throat has gotten progressively worse during that time (today was first that felt slightly better, but not much). I also find the mouthwashes too much and gag on them as I do trying to gargle almost anything. I have had no luck really finding anything soothing So just have had to suffer through it.  Cold seems to help a bit, but not too cold, so a bit of ice in my water is nice.

one other thing that helped a bit is the Chinese milk tea, often called Pearl Tea but without the pearls.  The milk helped coat the throat, but it did not have the strong dairy flavor that I cannot tolerate right now, sadly.  Perhaps other icy drinks might also help, depending on your taste tolerance and stomach conditions.

I wish you the best on this and hope you have better luck on it than I, though perhaps I am over the hump on that.
