DEXA Scans

For those of you who get DEXA scans, how long did you wait after radiation to have the scan.  Radiation effects continue over time, but I wonder if one should wait for a yr or more after the scan to get a more accurat evaluation.

    dexa scans

I had one a little over a year after treatment.  This is part of what the report says:

Comparison to the most recent study dated 11/12/2003 shows:

There has been no significant change in bone mineral density at the spine,

but bone mineral density has decreased 1.1% at the hips.

I know I talked with my doctor and I don't remember specific remarks but she said it wasn't signifcant change in the hips.

I am only 3 months out from treatment so I have not had this scan yet but I asked my friend who is three years out and she said she had it after one year.

I finished treatment in September 2008 and had my very first DEXA scan in March 2009.  I now have osteoporosis in both hips and my spine.

    I've been osteopenia (now

I've been osteopenia (now osteoporosis) for quite a few years so have had DEXA tests many times.  They are a test, not not a scan involving radiation injected as in Scans with Contrast.  Very basically DEXA tests are just X rays.

Your DEXA scans must have been different than mine.  I have never had contrast for a DEXA scan but have had it for CT and PET scans.
