persistent dry cough

Hi everyone,

My mum's cancer has metasised to her lungs giving her persistent dry cough. Doctor has given her codine syrups and morphin but nothing seems to help. She also has a nabuliser but most of the time that doesnt help either. Is there any advice or guidance you can give that might help her get some relief? Her quality of life is extremely poor at the moment as she can hardly talk without coughing a lot. Oncologist advised that her tumours are not obstructing any of the major breathing passages. But obviously something is affecting it. So sad to see her like this! Not sure what to do.

You can try some anti-inflamatory medicines or herbs (teas) which to reduce the "accumulation" inside... I am not sure whether you will understand me correctly since my mother language is not English and I am using some kind of translation sites. Still, I am writing this, since my mother has also been diagnosed and had breathing problems. There was a period when she could not talk almost and we did not allow her to. Now she is caughing but still not so so so bad, as before. Now we have another problem to beat and that is to provide more oxigen inside her blood. She is making blood tests and the level of oxyden is lower than normal. So now we will try this. I advice your mother to make this blood test to understand the level of oxigenization and then to think about having some oxigen inside. Still, we are trying and hoping and praying every day.

At what stage is your mother diagnosed? How has she proceeded up to now? Was she at some surgery or chemotherapy? What food have they advice your mother to eat? Please, share also some information as we are fighting every day with the cancer and every kind of information is useful.

If the room humidity is low

If the room humidity is low put a cool moisture vaporized in the parts of the house she frequents the most.  The OPs suggestion for teas is a good one.  Add honey to it to coat the throat and heal any inflammation.

Thankyou for your response. Which herbal tea do you recommend? Her cough is dry so there is no mucus buildup. Doctor has now also recommended her to take oxygen as she is low on it. So now we will try giving her regular oxygen. Sounds like what you described for your mum.

 

My mum's cancer started in her uterus and had hysterectomy 2 years ago. But it had already spread to lungs which they misdiagnosed until few months ago. So stage 4 and quite advanced.

Thankyou for your suggestion. I dont think humidy is the issue as it has been raining here. I am reluctant to give honey as i read sugar can feed cancer. Not sure if it is true though.

Cancer is a hungry, greedy little monster.

Your reluctance to feed him sugar is understandable but studies have shown that they make no difference.  Healthy cells need sucrose to remain strong and reproduce.  Cancer is a sneaky cell, it can take the protein from healthy cells and produce the sugars they need. Moderation is the key word here.
