Burning in esophagus, throat, stomach from 5FU
Thought some of you esophageal CA folks might have some suggestions for me. My husband has nasopharyngeal cancer, and just started a four day infusion of 5FU and Cisplatin. The 5FU is causing intense burning in the stomach, esophagus and throat. Any suggestions on managing this side effect? He has a PEG tube and is pretty much unable to swallow due to pain issues.
Thanks,
Barb

Hi Barb - I saw that no one
Hi Barb - I saw that no one responded -sorry - I know its been a month, I hope things are a little better. My husband tried this liquid that they prescribed that he would swallow to numb the throat - I can' t remember the name of it but it did work - even though he hated the taste (he has lidocaine in it). Also he ended up with a J tube into the intestine because he could not tolerate enough by mouth when he had chemo (he was too sick). The jtube really saved him from losing too much weight. about 8 weeks after chemo and radiation stopped, he regained his ability to eat without pain (the burning got less and less ove time). But then he had surgery and that's a whole other issue....
