in Ovarian Cancer #1

anyone familiar with this when they were doing chemo? My wife, Lorraine was supposed to have it yesterday, but because her stomach wounds haven't healed enough, they delayed it until she's healed. She was very nervous because she heard the side effects were pretty brutal... nosebleeds, paralysis, etc. Was just wondering if anyone had any experience with this. Thank you

    Lovenox, which is a type of heparin , keeps you from forming blood clots when you are not moving around much. I have had it after both major surgeries in my life.  I had my entire colon removed in 2001 d/t ulcerative colitis and again in 2013 d/t my hysterectomy for ovarian cancer. I am also a pharmacist, so have dispensed a lot of it over the years. We see very, very few side effects. Patients are usually on it for a short time, until they can get up and move around. Getting a blood clot after surgery because you can't move around much, can be very serious. Hopefully your wife will be off of it soon, but the benefits are definitely worth the risk for this drug in short term use. Vickie

    I am from the Uterine Board and have been on Enoxaparin ( generic for Lovenox) since 1/2012.  I had bilateral blood clots in my lungs which was picked up on a CAT scan.  I had no symptoms from the blood clots.  I take the shot every day.  I have had no side effects from the enoxaparin.   I used to bruise easily before, but have not noticed any bruising since I started the shots. 

    Why was Lorraine going to need the shot?  Many people get Nuelasta shots after their chemo to boost their white blood cell production.

    I gave myself the shots daily for six weeks or so after my de-bulking surgery.  I had no problems with it.  I gave it in my thighs, not my belly.  I am not a small woman, so there was plenty of flesh on my thighs for the shot.  I'm a nurse and I know the terrible problem blood clots can be, so it is worth the minimal stick.

    I had to give myself the shot daily for about one month after my debulking surgery.  At first, the idea of giving myself a shot every day was very scary.  However, I didn't have any problems either.  The needle was very short and I stuck myself in my belly each day at about the same time.  Good-luck to you and your wife!

    I gave myself Lovenox

    I gave myself Lovenox injections for 15 days (it was supposed to be 30 days). I was diagnosed with terminal ovarian cancer which spread to my liver. Since it spread to my liver, I was having a horrible amount of fluid building up in my stomach. Plus, due to diet changes, I lost 32 pounds in 32 days, due to these 2 reasons, the injections were more painful than the blood clots. I was told that with every 5 pounds of weight loss or gain, the amount of the injection needs to be adjusted. It was too much trouble to me. The injections were not bad at first though. It does not sound like many people share my experience, just things to be aware of.
