Masectomy or Lumpectomy with Radiation

Hi everyone,
I am 46 and was diagnosed with DCIS 4 1/2 mm Breast Cancer in October 2014. They did say there was a 5 cm suspicious area in the breast as well. Last year I had a lumpectomy on the other breast which came back benign. My sister was diagnosed at the same age. I am waiting on my genetic testing results, if positive I will definitely get a double mastectomy. My surgeon is suggesting lumpectomy with radiation while my gynecologist is very adamant about getting double mastectomy and Hysterectomy. I don't know what to do???? Any insight that may be helpful. Thanks and God Bless

    Genetic testing

You didn't say how long the results of the genetic test will take to come back. Is it possible you can wait until then? Can the suspcious area be biopsied or checked further with MRIs? It looks to me like getting a lumpectomy might just mean further surgery down the road. Good luck going forward and keep us updated. Hugs, Anna

I decided that I wanted to do

I decided that I wanted to do what I could to prevent having to do surgery and whatever again, so I had a double mastectomy -- my left side was trouble while the right was just beginning to show cancer.  The staging of the left put me in the chemo/rads group.  It was doable.  I am two years clear.

Sherry ... You can make sense of this...

The advice of your OB-GYN .... what do you know about your tumor type?  In the 5 weeks since I was diagnosed, I have learned there are so many differences in the sh*t that is taking over our normal biology.  To have advice as you mention, just wonder....

    Figuring things out!!!  Maggie

    Decisions so hard

Really hard to decide what to do when you get conflicting advice.   Listen to your Heart and your Gut.

    2008 I had DCIS-no mention to

2008 I had DCIS-no mention to me about masactomy-I have lumpectomy, radiation and 5 yrs of Tamoxifen. @nd lumpecomty on the same sie-thankfully it was only scar tissue.

I did have total hysterectomy after about 3 1/2 yr of being on tamxifen due to the meds.
