My 2 year old son has lumps I am very worried
Hi, my name is Jessica and my son's name is Jacob. around feb of this year I noticed a lump on my son's neck just close to his ear on the left side... I wasn't to worried then it wasn't very big it was a cause for concern.. by march it was more noticeable so I took him to my gp and they told me its noting to worry about, its just viral, so I left it alone by the end of april he still had the lump and it only looksed as if its gotten bigger instead of shrinking, so now i am getting really worried.. I took him back to my gp and he told me its normal its just a swollen node and its fine not to worry .. i left it but all that week it wasn't sitting wit me to just leave it so I took him back to my gp and he finally sent him for an ultrasound.. before our apt Jacob had developed another swollen node that i could see and feel... so we went for the ultrasound and the results came back that he has several swollen nodes in the left side of his neck laggest one being 1.6 cm and and there is one on the right side being 1.5cm.. the ultrasound report said to come back in a month for reassment but my GP still thinks there is nothing wrong.... i will be going back for the next ultrasound but I don't know what to do if my GP still says nothing is wrong but they are still that size or larger...Do i take his word for it... my profile picture is my sons neck where one of the lupms are

Son
Hi Jessica and welcome to the group. I'm sorry to hear that you are so worried about your son and I sure understand why you are. That is a big lump on a little guy.
If he were my little boy, I would tell the doctor I wanted another opinion. Don't be shy about asking. Doctors welcome requests for second opinions all the time. When the doctor says, "It is a viral infection" you can say, "How do we know that for sure"? Or, "What else could it be"? When he says, "Don't worry" you can say, "I can't help it. I am worried". One of my favorite questions to ask doctors is, "What would YOU do if it was YOUR son"?
Blessings,
Rocquie

Bumps
Jessica - my son had similar lumps at that age only not as many. They went away. However I think that you need to get a second opinion. Ultrasound really doesn't say anything about the cause. My GP told me not to worry "its nothing" for 2 1/2 years before I was diagnosed. I would bet that its nothing but the peace of mind a second opinion might bring you would make the effort worthwhile. Have they done any bloodwork on him?
best wishes

Welcome
Hi Jessica and welcome to the site. Sorry little Jacob is having problems. I agree with Rocquie. This has been going on for 4+ months so I'd be concerned also. Has he had any other symptoms like fever, sore throat, etc.? I used to get swollen nodes as a kid due to ear and throat problems. In fact, my tonsils kept growing back and getting infected (they were removed 3 times). I started having a similar problem while in college and yep, tonsil tissue again (mostly way back on my tongue where you can't see). They removed that and I haven't had a sore throat since other than through irritation or the like.
I don't think cancer is likely but it is possible so I'd have it checked out further. Please keep us updated and I hope he feels better!
Hugs - Jim

Child
JMcCabe,
I'm sorry Jacob is having this scare. I took my daughter several years ago for "lumps" (she was 18 at the time, not a juvenile), and it was confirmed to be mono, but I know the worry a parent can have, especially with a family history of lymphoma, such as I have had.
Like G-- suggested, I would go to another doctor and get a second opinion. I have never understood a doctor describing "something" as "nothing." If it were "nothing," it would not be buldging out of his neck.... what he really is saying is "it is nothing that I understand."
Another thing to be aware of is that very commonly, childhood cancers are quite differnt from adult cancers, and require childhood specialists to treat.
I hope and pray that it be "nothing," as regards cancer,
max

We finally got our dr. to give us a ref to an E.N.T so hopefully we will get some answers soon.

I would definitely get another opinion.
Could it be an allergy? I had swollen lymph nodes in my neck due to hair dye years ago. Not your particular problem, I know.
Nancy.
thanks for responding..
