Has anyone been treated for Hydronephrosis as a side effect
During my recent CT scan and then PET/CT, it appears that my soft tissue mass has grown slightly and that I have what is called moderate hydroureteronephrosis. Apparently the ureter from my left kidney to my bladder is going through the soft tissue and is getting dialated. I now have to see an urologist.
I was wondering if anyone else had this problem and what treatment did you do. There was talk of a stent or removal of the mass. I've had the mass I believe since my original diagnosis (2005) and has been stable with a SUV reading of 2.4 and 2.6 x 1.6 cm. Upon recent scans it now has a SUV reading of 3 and grown to 6 x 1.7 cm in size.
I was treated as ovarian although my diagnosis was Endometrial Adenocarcinoma (Grade 2, Stage 3a) as it was found in my left ovary and uterus.

Hi Kathy. I'm Natalie and I
Hi Kathy. I'm Natalie and I also have kidney issues. There is a tumor pressing on my right ureter. I have metal stents on both sides because the plastic ones weren't strong enough. The stents cause me dull pain and I usually always have a UTI now. BUT my kidneys are draining properly. My urologist changes my stents about every 4 months. It's an outpatient procedure. They just knock me out and it's over in 30 minutes. A word of advise: don't try to do anything the day after your stent placement. You just need to rest and take it easy. I hope this info is helpful. Let me know if you have any other questions! Blessings to you

Thanks Natalie for your reply:
Did they ever suggest surgery to remove the tumor? Mine is on my left side. It was stable for a long time and now has increased in size. (slightly 2.6 to 6 cm) But in an already scarred area I think any size increase can cause problems. I was starting to have pain (that dull pain) like I had prior to my recurrence in 2009 and prior to my diagnosis in 2005 in my lower back, hip, and leg. It started last February and since that time I have been doing everything I can to find out what it is. And apparently it increased from my CT scan in June to my CT scan in January. I am concerned if the stents would cause more pain and if it wouldn't be better to have the tumor removed. The only thing is that I think that the ureter is passing through some of the tumor so that could be a problem.
Do they put you under each time they change the stents? Is it true that a string or something hangs out?
Thanks for all the info. It was very helpful. I will let you know what happens after the 11th (hopefully I won't have to cancel because of weather!)
Kathy
P.S. Love your cat!

My oncologist said the tumor is pretty small so she doesn't want to operate unless she has to.
They do put you under for each stent change. There isn't a string hanging out because these are permenant stents. I think the temporary stents have a string. I think those are used if you're trying to pass a kidney stone.
I love this picture. This is my Angel kitty, Onyx. He passed away last March. I still miss him so much!!

Hi Natalie:
You're so sweet for asking! Well I went to the urologist yesterday. After a 3 hour drive, we got there as scheduled. I went and did all of the "new patient" stuff, filling out forms, etc., then when to the intake room, they took more information, and then to the exam room. After waiting in the exam room for 70 minutes without anyone coming in to check on me or tell me that the doctor was running behind finally the physician assistant came in (with dingy white coat which also had a previous stain on it) and without apology started to ask me questions again (just like the ones I filled out when I first got there). After that, he left and I waited another 10 minutes or so before the doctor came in and he said that since my urine was fine and it appeared that I wasn't having any symptoms, he felt that I should see my gyn/onc again about what they wanted to do with regard to the mass. (removal, chemo, etc.). He said he could put a stent in but that it could cause me more problems that I am having right now and that I would have to have it removed and placed back in, etc. etc. So he left it at that and said I didn't need see him unless I developed any real symptoms and that I should see my gyn/onc and get scanned more often.
I think I should have just gotten an urologist near my home. And I should have went with my gut feeling that I should have spoken to my gyn/onc first but his physcian assistant was the one who said to go to the urologist. (I should always listen to my gut feeling!)
Anyway, I wanted my gyn/onc to call me who I asked specifically for yesterday, but today I got the physician assistant. Again she said if you are not having problems then just let it go. I told her I have been having pain for a year now and it is gradually getting worse. Anyway, I made an appointment with the gyn/onc and am scheduled to see him Tuesday if my schedule clears.
I am so happy everything went well for you yesterday! I hope you are feeling great too!
Kathy
P.S. I hope you are taking it easy today!

well...
I'm sorry you didn't get any answers. I don't want to scare you, but I found out I had hydronephrosis because I nearly had kidney failure. I was very sick, in the hospital over a week. 3 surgeries in that time. My kidneys were so bad from not draining that the Dr had to put a tube thru my back into my left kidney so it could drain.
I just hope they figure out what to do before you get really sick like I did! Cancer sucks! I hate it so much!
Blessings to you Kathy!
ps-I've been resting and I'm feeling better. Thanks

I see my gyn/oncHi Natalie:
I see my gyn/onc on Tuesday so I should have some answers. Did your symptoms come quickley? Also, what type of symptoms did you have? I am not sure if it can come and go. A few weeks ago I thought I had food poisoning. However, I didn't feel nauseated. I just had real bad stomach pains until I vomited a few times. I am not sure if the inflammation can increase and decrease causing symptoms at times and then other times not. Plus sometimes I get a low fever.
Anyway so glad to hear you are feeling better. The sun is shining here (Pennsylvania) so it feels good and its Friday! I hope you have a fabulous weekend.

I had already met my urologist and had stent placement surgery scheduled for a Tuesday. The Friday before the procedure, my kidneys got bad and I was vomiting uncontrolably. I went to the ER and was admitted to the hospital. It was awful. By the grace of God I got thru it! Blessings to you dear
