in Head and Neck Cancer #1

I go next Monday to get my PEG tube replaced, this will be the first time and the doctor said he will need to pull it out. I told him he better plan to tie my arms down so I don’t knock him out or start running as fast as he can once he puts me in that much pain; so he decided to do my 5 year colonoscopy and while I am under to replace the PEG.

    Sounds easier doing it this way.  Of course getting ready for the colonscopy is no fun.  My husband's PEG tube has been in almsot 2 years now and I remember when the first one he had was removed.  Our H&N specialist just said ready and pulled.  I shut my eyes.  My husband said it wasn't too bad.  He was sore for a couple of days.  I do wonder if this one needs to be replaced how it will be done because they can't go down his throat into his esophagus due to the tumor.  But so far he hasn't had any problems with his PEG tube.

    Mine has been changed

    My tube has been changed twice by pulling it out, and putting the new one in. It didn't hurt either time - just some preassure.  I was mostly anxious about laying down flat - something I rearly do, and do not like to do.

    Jim has had his replaced

    Jim has had his replaced twice. Once when it fell out during sleep. The ER doc had a hard time getting it back in. The second time was because the cap wore out on the end. They did same day surgery and Jim felt nothing. It was not even sore. While waiting for surgery the nurse said, " you mean they didn't give you a Lopez valve?" She rounded one up for us. It is a valve you insert in the tube that has two ports on it. You place it on the opening in the tube and it has a on off lever to put your plunger in, thus saving the peg tube cap from being stressed. By using that Lopez valve his Peg tube has lasted for two years and we replaced the valve only twice. Cost $14. I pray all goes well dfurong your procedure.

    tim, thank God for the change of plans!!!!  i could NOT imagine them doing that to me.  i wonder if they'd think it was that simple if it were happening to them.  the way i see it, we go thru enuf pain fighting so hard, they should NOT add to it but make every effort to do things pain free when possible.  geesh.  anyway, i'm glad you will be out for the changing.

    PEG Replacement

    Tim, I had my PEG replaced once as the balloon was defective and leaked out 2 times.   I really dreaded it but it really wasn't bad at all.  They gave me a few painless deadening shots and I really didn't evem feel it.  

    hopefully yours is the same!
