Mom begins hospice

Starting today my mom begins hospice. She is 71, she has arhythmia, pneumonia, COPD, osteoporosis, fibromyalgia, triple bypass, and just recently her left kidney has died and her right is operating at less than 30%. She has lost a lot of weight and is down to 87 pounds. When my dad used hospice in 2009 it was for three weeks. I don't know for how long mom will need their service.  I will be providing her care at night.

Of course when death is this close it makes me think of my own journey.  I feel like I dodged that bullet in 2012. Death seems to always be hanging around the corners of my life, today it has pulled up a chair and is sitting right at the family table. I don't like it.

Prayers are welcomed.

    I am so sorry

There are no words to ease your pain but I pray that God holds your mother in His loving hands and gives strength to you and your family at time.

    PRAYERS AND MORE PRAYERS

So sorry your Mom has come to this stage of her life.  Many of us, I included, are familiar with all of the mixed emotions, difficult days and moments, and so much more during a time like this.  My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

    Not so good

Mom has had days where she requires full assist to move from wheelchair to toilet to wheelchair to bed. Also, she had one night where I could not understand what she was saying-- lot of mumbling and disjointed speech. She is sleeping more and fairly crabby when awake.  We try to keep her pain free, but she does not want to take any more meds.

Sunday is my sister Annie's 50th birthday.  She has significant disabilites.  She is home this weekend and very excited for her party.  We are going to her favoirte hamburger place for lunch and party.  She spreads such joy and simple happiness.

Thamks so much for the update.  but, you neglected the question, "how are you?"  I suspect you are so busy you don't even notice your own needs. I'm praying for lots of folks to step up and ease your burden as you provide tender care for your mom.

How is hospice going for you and your mom?

I hope you are getting the support you need from your family and the hospice team. I want to echo Merrily's thoughts...how are you holding up through this?

    All the best,

    Susan
