Our annual survivor trip
Eleven years ago last August I had just got out of the hospital from my neph. and my my wife thought we should go on a Carribean cruise in January to celebrate my recovery and the fact that I had not checked out (she really thought I might check out soon in the begining). The C word was a lot more scary to me then, than it is now. Our 12th annual Caribbean survivor's cruise is next week. The previous 11 we started in San Juan and went South. This one is for the Western Carabbean and we are going to a bunch of new islands for a change.We generally plan each port when we get there although I am lining up a Dirty Banana for Jamaca.
We are especially looking forward to our cruise this year as my cousin the weatherman has really tried to ice us over this year at least for those of us in Michigan.
As each of us goes on our journeys we should each do something special for ourselves and our families amd not let the fact that we had a bout with Kidney Cancer get us down..

we just returned from Hawaii;
we just returned from Hawaii; it was wonderful!!! We had just returned from the Carribean last summer when my husband was diagnosed and I was unsure that we would ever travel again as I watched him battle and how weak he became with the weight loss.
i need to stop from feeling that we are making memories and start believing that he will survive from this horrible illness that has entered our lives.
we are planning a return to Hawaii this June.
enjoy your trip!

An annual survivor trip sounds like a great idea! I was diagnosed on our 21st wedding anniversary so it was no time to celebrate but I'm hoping to celebrate our22nd in a big way! I know what you mean about trying to stop making memories and just live...trying to make that shift In my brain too...have an awesome trip!! xo

Can't beat a vacation
Hey Ice, I'm a michigander also. I was diagnosed with a kidney tumor in early October. My surgeaon told me I needed a radical nephrectomy (4cm tumor in a bad location). I had a planned vacation later in October to Sedona, AZ, the Grand Canyon, and Vegas. He told me it would take about 3 to 4 weeks to get me in for the surgery. He then said to keep my vacation plans and we would have surgery scheduled upon my return. Some of my family and friends thought we were nuts to go on a vacation. How could you possibly enjoy yourself? I can tell you that my vacation was fabulous, I really didn't think much about my problem. When we returned we dealt with the surgery. All I can say is that we need to enjoy every day. Take your cruises, take your trips, enjoy your life.

Most years I go to florida or myrtle beach for winter golf vacation. This year I am content just being home. Catching up on things I need to complete. In the winter I have felt that as darkness comes early it was like a window shade being pulled down over my eyes. Quite the metaphor for watching my life pass. I do look forward to a couple motorcycle trips this summer. Also have a camping spot at the beach for a couple weeks.
Everyone needs to take some time for themselves after fighting their cancer diagnosis. And it is ok to be a little egocentric for awhile. Do something for yourselves. It's the old saying, "Don't go away mad. Just go away."

I won a trip to St. Marteens a couple years back but never got to go. So the opportunity expired. I really wanted to go. My wife was completely uninterested. But I also won a trip to Hawaii 20 years ago. We went to that one. I hope you've been doing situps. Or is the belly hang gonna take the place of sunscreen on your youwho?

I seriously laughed out loud, fox! You conjured up quite the mental image.
Ice, sorry to hear you had to nix the cruise. What a bummer! I'm sure Vegas will more than make up for it...unless you come back broke.
Ron, I'm a biker chick. Some day I want my own Harley, smaller than hubby's of course, but for now I'm content riding b****. We have his and hers Jeep Rubicons so it's only fair that we should have his and hers bikes. How cute would we be?! Hubby thinks "the cute factor" is not reason enough for me to get my own bike. Really? What a spoiler! I think he just likes having me wrapped around him, if the truth be known.
Anyway, maybe I'll check out that free cruise
