Aloe Vera

I am still uncertain on the use of ointments etc during radiation treatments.  My radiation team says using them after treatment (daily) is what they recommend.  They gave me Aquaphor healing oint and CeraVe moisturizing cream.  I know nothing is to be applied within 4 hours of daily treatments.  Aloe Vera has been suggested....is there a brand/type that is safe to use?  One I looked at had grapefruit extract in it and I did not think that would be good.  I am trying to have a skin care regimen in place and appreciate your help.  I am less than a week from chemo/radiation treatments.  Keep me in your thoughts/prayers.  Thanks for all your support!

    Aquaphor

I tried many ointments both prescription and over the counter and Aquaphor was the winner for me.  I am 5 years post treatment today.

In order to get pure aloe with nothing added to it, I would say your best bet is to purchase an aloe plant and get it directly from the leaves.  There are websites that show and tell how to do this.  I've heard that straight aloe is the best.

My radiologist recommends Aquaphor for everything.  They also gave me a gel which was aloe based and designed specifically for radiation dermatitis.  I was instructed to use it AFTER treatment and before bed every day.  I did not have the severe blistering and peeling burns that many people have wrote about.  I believe the gel is over the counter (but the pharmacy will probably have to order it for you.).  It is called Natural Care Gel (Bard is the manufacturer and there's a 800 # on the tube I have, 800-526-4455).

Best wishes as you begin your treatments.  You will be in my thoughts and prayers.
