Looking for answers

in Ovarian Cancer #1

In short. Mom 81 recurrent ovarian cancer on 4 th recurrence only in lymphnodes behind stomach small spot on lung that has been there for ever and same with thyroid lite up during scan . She doesn't want anymore treatments. How slow growing is this monster. Also began suffering from delirium. Trying to keep her at home with me. But very difficult. She is uncooperative with eating and drinking fluids hence dilerium gets worse. Last pet was over 100 does seem real high to me but nurse says that is high. Also heart issues of rapid heart beat and diabetes. She wants to sell house and divide money up I'm worried I won't be able to keep up with her care at home. I am also a lung cancer survivor. And work full time. Anyone have any ideas or options

    First of all congratualtions on being a lung cancer survivor! From your profile I understand that you're BRCA1+, and watching your breasts with regular mammos and MRI's. Just a thought: have you considered preventative salphingo-oophorectomy to reduce the risk of ovarian cancer?

    About your mother. It's a difficult situation and a delicate trade-off of quality of life vs. quantity. In your place I would respect her wishes, not do any more chemo and try to keep her comfortable and pain-free. At her age with heart issues, diabetes and delirium, chemo may be too hard on her. Are there other siblings nearby who could pitch in? If not already covered by Medicaid, maybe selling her house could generate funds for a full-time caregiver to stay with her while you're working. Have you explored home-based hospice? They could send the nurse to help you with your mom's care, keep her hydrated, keep track of her medications, etc.

    thanks for your concern Alexandra. I already had the oophorectomy 6 years ago.  I have a brother on the other side of the country.  CA 125 just doubled in 3 months.  checking into Hospice. Selling her house this week but she insists on giving the money to her grandchildren so we can forget paying for someone to come in .
