Boost, Resource, Ensure, etc.

I eat three meals a day. I was trying to supplement with the high calorie/protein drinks but have run into a problem. They seem to make me nauseated after I drink them. Which makes them harder and harder to get down knowing that they are going to make me feel puny. Anyone else have this problem and how did you supplement?

    Jamie,

    May not be the solution for you, but I found that if I ate everything at room temperature, it didn't upset my stomach as much. Just throwing this out there for you.

    Yep

    I usually eat everything at room temp. Helps me too. I just can't use any of those drinks - even at room temp.

    Hi Jamie,

    Sorry you are going through this. My mom also had the same problem. I tried to get her the healthiest protein drinks and for some reason they also made her vomit. It isn't the most healthiest option, but I bought her some high calorie boost and she waters it down with milk and puts that in her tube.

    I am just a caretaker, but there are a lot of great people on here who can give you some very helpful advice.

    If the high protein drinks

    make you feel puny all day...or worse, you can't hold them down....then stick to the ones that don't make you feel nauseous.  I totally survived on Boost VHC (Verh High Calorie).....8 oz has 530 calories......and like Robin's mom, I thinned it out with 4% milk (that adds a few more calories).....getting that many calories in 8 oz makes the "meal job" quick and almost pain free. 

    You can get Boost VHC at Amazon.com.....a case gets delivered to your door, and when you're down to 10 or 12, you just order another case....I did everything possible to make nutritian as easy as possible...I just didn't have the energy to worry, wonder, find, and then drink the stuff (I only manged 3 of the damned things a day, as it was).....BUT, I did imbibe in 1/2 gallon of milk everyday.

    Hooray for you!  Protein based shakes are the best if you can digest them. I  used to drink them cold.  Not by choice but just a byproduct of my method of preparation.  I put powder in shaker cup,  add milk,  and some ice cubes.  Cap it and shake away.  The ice cubes did a super job of blending the powder and milk.  Never caused me any problems.  I did take my time drinking it, just taking sips over time. Try a few other options before going to the can sugar club.  Don

    Yep!

    You are good to go. Give it a try.  Whey just identifies the source.  Soy is another main source. You will see the term isolate and that refers to the amount of protein in the powder.  It is the most concentrated for and is priced at a  premium. For our needs,  no need to pay up.  Concentrate works fine.  

     

    Often, protein powder include minerals and vitamins so you get other benefits.

    I have whey protein here because I was living a low calorie, high protein diet for quite a while (did my best to eat healthy and excersise). I have EAS Whey protein, but have been apprehensive to use it because I think I can remember reading some place that if it has such and such a thing in it, you shouldn't use it. Have any idea what I'm talking about? lol

    guru? NOT!

    The better description is I am the Ensure and all can sugar HATER! Why on Earth people consume the stuff and why doctors recommend it is just criminal! But I'll leave that for another long winter day. Meanwhile, I love questions like this one. Frankly, it is the first time I heard someone question the ingredients in protein powder. Looking up the ingredients in yours I found: 

    Whey Protein Concentrate (Whey Protein Concentrate, Soy Lecithin), Corn Maltodextrin, Natural & Artificial Flavor, Salt, Whey Protein Isolate, Carageenan, Xanthan Gum, Acesulfame Potassium, and Sucralose.

    On balance, this seems quite benign. Now, I am no med pro so.... The Carageenan is used to give body to the drink but there appears to be some study showing it may cause inflamation. Acesulfame Potasium is an artificial sweetner as is the sucralose (Splenda). I guess you need to decide how bad this stuff is. I'd look at an Ensure label and you can make the easy decision yourself.  Remember the maltodextrin is a complex carb not simple sugar like the can sugar drinks.

    Given our weakened ability to consume nutrition achieving the nominal 1gm per pound of body weight is a stretch so the effects would be less even if present.
