A strange question regarding food...

in Head and Neck Cancer #1

My 17 year old LOVES peanut butter sandwiches.  He eats at least 1-2 a day.  He hates the crust so he cuts it off and gives it to our dog (who is very happy about it!)  Yesterday, I grabbed one of the crusts to nibble on as he made another sandwich and about 2 minutes after I ate it, the inside of my mouth started swelling.  Just the side where they did the surgery and removed my jaw.  The other side was fine, and my airways were also fine.  It was very puffy inside my mouth (on the one side) and my speech was very slurred as a result.  I also started drooling some on that side due to the sudden swelling.  This has never happened before.  I drank a LOT of water and within an hour I was back to normal.  I tried a snack size reese cup later in the evening to see what would happen and I got a tiny bit puffy but nothing like earlier in the day.  Do you think I'm developing an allergy to peanut butter?  Is that possible?  Is it a weird fluke?  I want to try it again to see what happens but I'm a little afraid it could get worse next time.

    tracy, i'd think u could develope an allergy at any time n life.  sure sounds like thats the problem.  let us know the result f u try it again.  good luck.

    Hey Tracy, I wouldn't try something like that on your own again. The Reese's probably didn't make you swell up too much because there probably isn't all that much real peanuts in them, LOL.  But really, a peanut allergy is nothing to fool around with!  Damn, the next time could be worse and your throat could close up.  Even though it seems strange that just the side that had surgery was affected, I wouldn't mess around.  Get tested for allergies.  Whatever you do, if you do decide to try again, make sure you are not home alone.

    Oh my gosh, I am turning into my dad -- such a Nervous Nellie!  Sorry, I just don't want you to have a terrible reaction.  I have heard plenty of horror stories about people with peanut allergies.  Just sayin'.

    I agree with Shawn. Let the Dr test to see if your allergic to peanuts. Your experiment is kinda  sorta like touching a live wire and not knowing how many volts are pushing through.  Just recently there was a guy I represent who was allergic to peanuts and mistakenly consumed some and is now no longer with us.

     

    Couldn’t help noticing our good friend Debbiejeanne talking like a Teamster again “f u try it again”. Debbie, I am in the middle of some real tough negotiations and sure could use your help. When they piss me off I will give you the nod and you can give them a “f u”. Just a thought…………

    STEP AWAY FROM THE PEANUT BUTTER.

    You could definitely have developed a sudden peanut allergy.  Our bodies have changed so much since treatment, that it makes some sense that it could happen.

    I would definitely not try it again and tt your doctor about it.  I figure there are so many things I can't eat anymore, just add peanut butter to the list.   Switch to some protein power instead !
