i thought this was what obomacare was taking care of. Has she tried going to the exchange?
Does she have group or individual coverage? Group generally always covers existing and individual won't cover existing without some huge increases or never covers. We're both self employed and we have individual. I've got Anthem/Blue Cross and have had the same plan with not issues on dropping me, just see the rates going up up and away!!!
Obamacare isn't effective until JANUARY 2014 to cover pre-existing. If I wanted to change today to another company, they'd not cover me due to the cancer pre-existing. Now if I start in January '14 for coverage yes no one can turn me down for any "pre-existing".
Suggestion -- call a insurance broker who handles various co's for health care. See what they can do NOW.

Call your federal reps and let them know what happened to your mom. State reps, too, especially if you are in a state which turned down exchanges. Talk to social workers at facility where she is being treated- they may be able to help get some temproary coverage. Tell the newspapers too!!!
