in Anal Cancer #1

Diagnosed 3-B in January 2013; completed treatment 28 March.  Had great response & 2 good PET scans; doctors were very optimistic.   But a biopsy done during a sigmoidoscopy last week revealed we didn't get it all. 

Spent the week-end doing research, and am frankly having a hard time wrapping my mind around the next step.  Meeting with the surgeon at 2 p.m. today about a colostomy.

    I can't imagine how disappointed you are that the treatment did not rid you of the cancer and I am so very sorry.  I hope you will have a good appt. with the surgeon today and feel more comfortable and confident about what lies ahead.  I'm sure you are overwhelmed right now.  Please let us know how it goes and when you might be having your surgery.  I will send up some prayers for you and I wish you all the best.

    I am so sorry to hear this.  Have you thought about getting a second opinion?  We will be here to support you.

    I am sorry to hear this. I would get a second opinion at a different cancer center for sure! Sending prayers your way!

    Hi, so very sorry for the spot you're in. My diagnosis was 3b about 2.5 years ago also. I did have surgery for a colostomy prior to beginning my chemo/rad. So far I have been good. The type of surgery (colostomy) that I had, (there are several different types of ostomies) did not require removing the anus or rectal stump but when I asked if I ever had a recurrance in the same area how it would be treated, I was advised that that would need to be removed along with possible chemo. Like others said, there is seldom harm in getting another opinion, I have done that a couple times when uncertain, although in my case have found opinions to be alike.

    I will pray that you recieve acceptable answers to your questions as you face this new challenge!

    Definitely...

    ...get a couple more INDEPENDENT second opinions from an other institutions. Independent means not a different dioctor from the same institution and don't let them know what the previous dontor said about your situation. Only the cold facts.
