in Anal Cancer #1

I have recently been having a little bit of (fresh) blood when I wipe and I originally thought hemmy.  Well, it has gotten worse and now there is pain.  I had a fissure last year that didn't hurt too much....mostly itched.  This is pain.  When I have a BM, I feel like it's pure glass.  It's the same normal diamater, consistancy and color....not thin or watery.....but it is painful and with dab of blood.  

 

I am going to have my female pap done Thursday and wonder if this is something she can check?  I can't see a colorectal surgeon in my area without a referral and the gastro always says "It's probably a hemmy."  

 

HELP!

    Sorry that you are in pain. Try not to worry. It may be a hemmy, but you need to be sure. You need to see a colorectal specialist. Don't take no for an answer. You need to have your concerns taken seriously.

    I would urge you to push for a referral to a colorectal doc.  I would not take "It's probably a hemmy" for a diagnosis.  I hope it turns out to be just that, but get it checked.

    Don't be shy and don't delay. So many different conditions are incorrectly misdiagnosed as Hem. It was 18 months before I was correctly diagnoses with AIN and the same was true with a friend with Ulcerative Colitis.

    Check, check and check again if you are not sure of a diagnosis

    Anal pap

    I believe you can ask for an anal pap smear. I don't know if your Gyn will know how to do it or not though.

    I agree with everyone else here. Colo rectal surgeon only. Misinformation is everywhere in the medical community when it comes to the anal area. Mine was the first case my GI had seen in his career and he is in his 50's and I live in lower Westchester County, Manhattan, a very dense area. He told me I needed to have a colostomy right away and my Internist agreed with him. I am so glad I took my records to MSK and found all the lovely people on this board, including Joanne.

    Our dear Joanne helped us communicate on this board and through us helping each other through this vehicle, we have a chance to turn this "boat" around in her name.

    We should try to organize an Anal Cancer Walk on her birthday or something. Even if it's just us.

    I love your idea of an Anal Cancer walk in Joanne's memory.  It's a shame we are scattered everywhere, or I would certainly organize such an event!!

    The pain and bleeding has

    The pain and bleeding has dropped a lot. The only pain I have now is with very low back pain but that's prob my chair at work. Going to see if ObGyn will check and/or refer me.

    Sandy, that is a great idea. I am wondering if the Anal Cancer Foundation has plannedmany public awareness campaigns. That is so badly needed!

    My first symptoms were back

    My first symptoms were back back bout 8 months before I was diagnosed. They did an MRI on my back and told me it was a slightly herniated disc.  If the MRI had been in front too, they would have seen the anal squamous tumor.  Six months later I got extreme constipation and that led to a colonoscopy when they found the tumor.  DON'T wait.  Got to colorectal doctor if you have anything that doesn't seem normal.  I had no bleeding but am so thankful I went to doctor for the consitpation.  About the start round two of chemo - first radition/chemo didn't quite do the trick aparently.  Hope to avoid surgery.

    See a Specialist

    Martin,

    I was brushed off for quite some time before I finally saw a doctor with a brain, he saw my lesion and immediately sent me to have a colonoscopy done, and they did a biopsy at that time.  A second biospy confirmed the diagnosis when I had hemmy surgery shortly thereafter.  I have had pap smears throughout the years and never once had an abnormal one.  So, please see a specialist.
