Sandy;
I am sorry to hearSandy;
I am sorry to hear that you have to have chemo. What was your Oncotype Score? Mine was a 7 and even being this low my onco recommended chemo because she said the size of my tumor and since one node had a little but of cancer, but I chose not to because of my low score. Another reason why I chose not to have chemo is because if I had participated in the clinical trial and my treatment said no chemo then what difference would it be if I just did what I chose to do. I have started radiation, on my third week and then tamoxifen afterwards. I hope all goes well for you during your treatment.
Take care,
Jenifer

Your insurance won't pay after 70? Why? I am glad you have a plan now and wish you the best!

The cancer treatment for those over 70 is very restricted under the medical rules of Obama's "Obama Care". I saw a part of the plan concerning older citizens and was shocked that this passed throgh the legislative system, but it did.

I am sorry to hear about your diagnosis and treatment. I am having chemo now for the second time and have had radiation twice (one chest, once ribs). Sounds bad but I am a 26 year survivor and still fighting. Hang in there! I am pulling for you!
P.S. I would ask to make appointment with hospital case manager and see if you can get help with insurance/medicare issues.

For now my insurance is covering well. It's the future and possibe recurrance. I'm already 63. I've read on this site of recurrances after 5 and 10 years.

Glad to hear! I am 60 (was 33 at diagnosis). Had my first recurrence after 18 years. It is unusual, but not unheard of--it pays to be vigilant with breast cancer. Good luck!

I had no idea that Obama care would do this. Another reason I don't like it. I am so sorry.

when I had chemo. Sounds like we had very similar diagnoses. My oncotype determined that I would have chemo, too. At 63 I never felt I was too old, but ageing and general health has always factored into decisions about treatments because they can be so toxic and sometimes ineffective. When we're 70 we'll deal with issues then and hopefully they'll have nothing to do with cancer. I don't profess to understand the new health care rules that will go into effect and I don't want to be political here, but I am not going to panic about them. I worry more about how other health issues I might develop will play into my quality of life as I age.
Good luck to you. Let us know what your onc recommends today.

Dear Coco2008,
Please remember that 70% of women never have a recurrence. Until you learn otherwise, I would think you would prefer to think of yourself in that group instead of the group that has a recurrence. There are all kinds of recurrence, local, regional and distant.
Yes, as CC stated, she had a recurrence many years later while I in my 19th year since diagnose have always been a member in good standing with the CancerCenter. My first recurrence was regional which happened 4 years after diagnose and the next one was mets. I began a wonderful hormonal drug that kept me NED for 8 years.
I wouldn't worry to much on what will happen when you are 73 or 78.
Best wishes to you,
Doris
